I can't believe there hasn't been a review for over a month, time to get back in the saddle. Got these today and decided to dive straight in. I had a Reserva Real Verona's Court on holiday and my tasting notes were 'mild and nutty with no pepper at all'. This was a different beast entirely. For anyone who doesn't know these are the Dominican RyJs not Cuban.
Measuring 7" x 40 this is a very well made stick with an almost unnoticeable pigtail cap. When squeezed the stick felt firm with just the right amount of spring to it.
The Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade wrapper is a light tan colour, quite toothy with visible veins that are not at all raised. The binder and filler are a blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican tobaccos and it is rated as medium strength.
The wrapper had a slightly sweet scent of cocoa about it and once cut the cold draw had traces of caramel. The draw was perfect with just the right amount of resistance.
Once lit the initial flavour was slightly sweet light woody taste with a touch of white pepper on the finish. That pepper came and went throughout the length of the smoke. The nuttiness from the corona was also there especially when enhanced with some milk chocolate that I was eating. The smoke was clean and the finish short. Unfortunately a mineral taste made its presence known every now and again despite my purging which leads me to think these are quite young and will benefit from being left alone for a while.
The burn was perfect and the ash dropped every half inch or so which is what I've come to expect from this vitola. A few relights were required but no touch ups. Next summer I expect this to be a damn good smoke.
I'll try to add pictures later but either the forum or my Mac is misbehaving and not letting me upload them.
