  • Newbie's take RyJ short Churchill

So the week is now over and I get to start my weekend

So what better way to get it started than with my first CC and after being suggested I went with the short Churchill.

Yesterday I smoked the Flor De Oliva Robusto Cigar so I could compare the Cuban with NC.

I purchased this purely on how it looked (stupid?) I think the band and the overall look of this stick is great and draws the eye! It was ok I won't try to comment on what I tasted because I'm so new to cigars and have nothing to compare, but made for a pleasant afternoon and more importantly would give me something to compare the Short Churchill too.

    So now onto the Cuban

On a bit of a dull day I sat down with my coffee and off I went.

The difference was amazing and I can now understand how different two cigars can be and why the majority love and favour CC's over NC.

The draw was great with plenty of smoke which felt a lot smother than the NC, almost creamy and very mellow. About halfway in I get a pleasant peppery taste which eases off towards the end. As with the NC Iv not gone into too much detail about what I tasted as again still so new to cigars.

My final thought, it was great, I now have a yard stick to compare future CC's too and I'm probably gonna pick up a few more but what matters most is that I really did enjoy it and roll on the next

    Nice one
The taste of a non cuban just doesn't do it for me.
Tried a few to make sure. Defo prefer Cubans...

Had my first one of these on holiday and loved it!

Nice start on reviews best bet is to sit down and really think about the flavours. Not all that easy at first but the more you smoke and think about how it tastes the easier it gets to recognise the individual flavours. Also helps to smoke the same cigar with someone else or read other reviews and see what they say and then see if you can pick up on what they're saying [emoji4]

Those short churchills look great! Will have to try one at some point. Seems to be a lot of love for them on here at the moment.

            Ditto [emoji16]

Seriously though, I found them to be a great "gateway" cigar to the more expensive Cubans.

Some of the Bolis & Montes that I've tried have been too strong, but these are quite mild and have some great flavour changes throughout the smoke.

Well done Jim, your on the rocky & expensive road to CC heaven. BTW what was the price difference between them, just as a matter of interest?

Short Story's seem to be a bit of a Marmite cigar. They don't taste of it, people either love them or don't.

I love the short story, I feel it's a good smoke for a quickly which is all I can have most of the time lately. Having said that I really don't know what smoking I'll be doing when this baby arrives in November as I'm likely to be up at night for him and Mrs Tommy won't allow me to go near him smoky. I guess I'll work it out.

Shower, brush teeth and mouthwash before bed should fix most of it mate.

Ya' know, muchacho...there are other sticks in the AF Hemingway line. Allow me to suggest the Signature, which is a toro, unlike the Short Story, which is more of a short perfecto, hence the name "short story."

Good effort Jim. I'm still pretty new to this myself and don't think I will feel confident about doing a review of anything for a long while. I'm slowly beginning to work out what I like, but my taste buds have probably been dulled over the years, so I can't describe why I like something - I just have a mental wish list and move things around on it when I smoke something which is better/worse. I'm guessing that when people talk about chocolate or coffee flavours, they're not talking Cadbury's Dairy Milk or a Nescafe with milk and 2 sugars!

I've mostly smoked CCs to date, just a few NCs, but the Black Market Robusto I had on Saturday was one of the best cigars I've had so far (despite issues at the start).
