Smoked a BHK 54 last night while sat listening to Kyung Wha Chung playing Tchaikovsky/Sibelius on CD. I've had a 52 previously so thought I'd share my thoughts on how this compared. I paired it with a large mug of hot chocolate and some Cadbury's Giant Buttons.

It looked the business, and the pre-draw had the distinctive BHK flavour to it. Upon lighting the draw was a bit tight, and there was some harshness not present in the 52. Surprisingly, and much like with the 52, I had uneven burn issues. After the first half inch the harshness was gone and was very much enjoying the sweetness. It's a difficult flavour to describe but to me it's a sort of floral perfumy sweet flavour. The Cadbury's Giant Buttons, and hot chocolate drink, were both excellent companions to the sweetness. I'm not sure whether there was any cocoa flavour in the cigar but there may have been. I'd say it was mild to medium bodied flavour wise to this point. Approaching half way I started to get some less sweet leafy/leathery flavours for a short time before the sweetness returned. I also noticed some white powder/residue on the gob end.

The burn issues continued and multiple corrections set things straight. The sweetness once again died away toward the last third to reveal some earthiness. The strength picked up considerably at this point maybe because it was drawing so freely now. My CD was had begun it's second play through and I was considering putting it down just as the lovely sweetness returned. I hung on to it for another 15 minutes or so, and it was starting to get a little harsh again. The uneven burn was still present, and after about hour and a half I finally put it down.

Although this does not seem like a strong cigar, it is none-the-less quite strong overall. I was on the verge of turning green, and had it not been for the chocolate buttons I probably would have already been green. I'd say it's a brave man that smokes that last inch! It's also a cigar that didn't want to be rested for too long between draws. It was much better kept reasonably warm. Overall it was a really nice cigar, not very complex, but the BHK sweet flavour is very pleasant on its own. Flavour wise it was practically identical to the 52. I don't remember there being any harshness in the 52 though. For the difference in price I'd say stick with the 52 unless you're desperate for the extra 20 minutes or so of smoking time. If the harshness is a feature of the 54, not all of that extra time will be as enjoyable.

I've got two more in the humi, so I'm looking forward to seeing how well the next one goes!

No mention of purging there Andy, try that next time it starts to get harsh. Blow firmly back through the cigar to expel waste and impurities that have built up. Tap off the ash first or it will drop in your lap!

Once I've been through my box of the same, I'll see whether the 54's are worth the extra money or not.
It'll be a case of keeping a stock of the 52 or 54… An hour for me, can be about right, time wise.
Only on that rare Summer occasion do I need something to last longer…

Oh never knew that. Next time I get some harshness, I'll be sure to give it a blow-job.

I remember a stupid thing, used to do as a youngster…
you put the cigar in your mouth the wrong way around, lit end inside (and try not to burn your tongue)
you then blow, and watch the thick smoke ooze out… stupid I know, but hey… kids do stupid things...

Tip top review there kind Sir!

I have 2 of each available BHK so 52, 54 and the 56. I will sample one of each and take notes on each one to give a comparison. I am pretty new to reviews on UKCF and obviously my understating is growing, slowly but surely and my palate is also expanding.

Anyhow, great review and I will throw in my 2 pennies when I have smoked them

To date I've been through a box of 52's. Had a 54, with a box left in the humi, and have had one 56. So far, not much between them flavour wise. 54 had the best burn by far. I'm gonna stick to the 52s or 54s. 56 in my opinion is too big, in an unnecessary way.
