Por Larranaga Petit Corona

Here's a petit corona that will be known to a lot of you I suspect. Measuring 5.12" with a ring gauge of 43 this is a firmly packed little stick, no softies here though maybe a little springiness when squeezed.
The wrapper was quite rustic looking with an oily look and the smell was simple good Cuban tobacco, I couldn't detect any flavour notes on this one. Once cut the unlit draw offered a little resistance and tasted peppery with a hint of caramel and gave my tongue a little chilli sting.
The first few draws really surprised me because they were ever so slightly salty, haven't tasted that before. It settled down a very creamy and smooth smoke which needed a good drag to keep it going. This cigar wasn't plugged but she was going to make me work for it.
The ash was a dark dirty grey and the burn was dead straight all the way but she needed a few relights, possibly due to the ambient humidity which was around 84%. The pepper increased throughout the hour and a quarter that it lasted and it started to get a bit bitter in the final third despite being purged.
Not a cigar that I would turn down but equally not one that I would seek out.

That's what I thought too. It's an outstanding cigar for the age, cost, and availability.
But it's not my taste.
The saltiness and late pepper belong in a steak not a cigar (but maybe in a Talisker too )

This is one of my favourite Petit Coronas, I've got some lovely sweet flavours from the ones I've smoked, although I do find they get a little bitter in the final third

I've only had a couple of these but enjoyed both, thinking about a box now (though I think they only sell a 50 cab, it might have to be split!). Good option for a shorter winter smoke IMO.

Then the profile is sweet and elegant. caramel and hneysuckle come to mind. Never tasted an prominent pepper/spice before but have not smoked a young one for many years.

This is broadly what I put in my notes. Both must have been young as I definitely can't recall any sweetness.

I'm in the same situation, a 50 cabinet just always seems like such a huge investment

Nice review as usual John. Despite mine being plugged, from the few drags I had of my brothers Sancho Panza Churchill I noticed that salty flavour you were talking about. It's weird that you find that in a cigar but I actually found it very pleasant

You're right Shepp, that's why its nice to see the Saint Luis Reys in a five box. The Americans have lots of theirs in boxes of five, it makes sense for us smaller buyers.

+1 Monkey's correct, these aren't wonderful young, and it takes a little while to really appreciate PL .... RE included. Best start of is the little Panatelas, it pretty much mirrors the tastes of the PC but doesn't need the same aging .... and when you can get a x25 box for less than ?50 .... makes a brilliant Winter go-to.
