  • Davidoff 3x3 Robusto

    3x3 Robusto - 4 7/8 x 50 Dominican stick with Ecuadorian wrapper.

Spongy to the touch, light coloured wrapper that isn't particularly pretty due to a couple scar like blemishes. Initial sniff is slightly musty with a faint hint of..... Is that mint?

I punch cut this bad boy courtesy of the punch I received today from PeeJay, and an admirable job it did being very neat and tidy. Pre light draw was straw like due I'm positive to the softness of the cigar and had almost no detectable flavour other than the faintest touch of hay.

Charring light gave a pronounced aroma of toast, and the first draw gave a slightly bitter And sulphurous flavour. The smoke coming off was very pale to almost none existent. Yet the Ash was pleasingly white, while not having the truest burn but nothing shocking.

Getting into the first quarter a leathery ness started to show up, but at the same time a hint of the mustiness came with it. At this point the cigar is mild in flavour and strength and the most impressive aspect is the ash.

Nearing the end of the first quarter and the smoke is a bit more impressive now and cedar tones start to take over as the burn evens out.

The ash dropped at a third and the flavour instantly stepped up a notch with dominant cedar.
Through this section to half way and the smoke starts to get yet more impressive and the flavour remains more intense yet is still roughly medium.

Flavours are not changing in anything other than intensity and sulphur is always hanging around in the background. In fact there is nothing much to report through the rest of the cigar.

It didn't go out once and ended quite peacefully 2 minutes before the hour with a couple centimetres left, i put it down because it got a little warmer than my lips like.

Overall it was ok, I probably would have really liked this a couple months ago... But I think I have been spoiled by some good sticks recently. I think that this is a decent stick to have a small stock of the share with friends.

I think the stick was about ?8 if memory serves, there are certainly better (yet smaller) Cubans at this price. Burning wise this stick turned out to be very trustworthy so it gets points for that.

Good review Marc, was that your first? I've just bought a few Davidoffs to try, hope they're better than this one sounds although I do like a mild smoke.

I picked up three 3x3 Robustos in Spain years ago for a cheap smoke, if memory serves they were only 4 euros each.

Smoked one on holiday and thought it was gross, so came home and put the other two away and forgot about them. Fast forward a year and a half and I tried one again, it totally transformed and was quite pleasant, simple and mild but perfectly palatable.

Also, I think the ones I had came pre punched, which was the first time I'd ever seen that.

Did you have any issues with bitterness smoked the churchill size and through the final third became very bitter to the point of ditching. But up to that nice smoke will Proberley try again

There were some hints of bitterness but nothing offensive.
