Punch Superfinos 2005/2007 RE Italia
Size: 110 mm x 42 ? Minuto
Smoke time: 53 mins
Box date: 2007. Source: Bwgan (From the last Italian Job).
This cigar was first released in 2005 and then a subsequent second release was made in 2007. The first release had a general ?Edicion Regional? second band.
Appearance: The same size as a Partagas Shorts, the Superfinos appears even smaller by the addition of the ?Exclusivo Italia? (2007 re-release) band, which along with the Punch Standard band ?A? obscured almost half the cigar. The earth brown wrapper was toothy although relatively smooth and carried few veins. The wrap-spiral was neat and barely discernable and the cap was crisply applied.
Construction: The cigar felt well packed with a reasonable yield and rolled between the fingers left behind a fair amount of oils. The pre-draw was acceptable, being loosish rather than resistive, and the smoking draw was clean and free throughout the smoke. The burn was dead-on and the grey ash was solidly compacted and without fault. No re-lights no corrections required.
Flavour: Pre-light aroma was headily barnyard. The Superfinos start was exceptional, a deep and delicious fruitiness ? reminiscent of damson or greengage? with roundedness which was almost winelike, but which almost in total contradiction left a saltiness on the lips. Gradually as woods entered the smoke the fruit qualities became much sweeter and lighter and slightly more acidic, I thought it like smoking a mouthful of mixed Spangles (fruit drops for US BOTL). The lingering follow through tastes in the mouth were exquisite and smoke from the cigar was pungent with aromatic woods. The balance of flavours in the cigar, which I would catagorise as being full, were excellent. Nearing the end of the third, the wood gathered in intensity yet all the sweeter tastes remained and were supplemented by the arrival of subtle hints of bitter lemon. Into the second third, and with the woods coming ever more to the fore, the sweeter flavours suddenly acquired a soft, delicious sodalike character and I just smoked along in mellow contentment. With the second giving way to the final third, the sweetness, although it never disappeared, adopted a back seat and allowed the wood, earth and leather so typical of Punch to take over. The flavours and the cleanliness of the smoke were outstanding, deep and full yet still lightly sweetened even until almost the end when hints of spice and light pepper came drifting in. Totalmente superlativa!
Overall: This is one very good cigar with good full flavours on a medium body. It isn?t as strong as a Partagas Shorts but doesn?t lack for strength either and I would happily recommend the Punch Superfinos to all experienced Aficionado. It isn?t a cheap smoke and not easily obtainable, but Mitch or Ajay seem to be able to get most REs sooner or later, so if the chance presents grab a few, they?re worth it.
For Newbees, there is nicotine strength, so be mindful.
