El Rey del Mundo Lonsdales
Size: 165 x 42 ? Cervantes
Smoke time: 1hour 25mins
Box date: Unknown
Deleted 2002, so the cigar was at least 10 years old.
Appearance: Rough toothed slightly drab looking lightly sheened mid brown wrapper with some heavy veins. Standard band ?A?.
Construction: The cigar felt densely packed getting firmer and harder towards the head. The wrapper spiral was good and the triple cap blended almost invisibly into the wrap. The pre-draw was surprisingly loose and the smoking draw was totally free flowing. The burn was reasonably straight, not perfect but good enough. No re-lights, no corrections required.
Flavour: The pre-light aroma was very light and grassy. The start was excellent, woody with a blast of aniseed and a hint saltiness. The Cuban ?twang? when it arrived was deeply sour citrus accompanied by light fruit (berry) notes. The flavours strength was an Medium and the fruit tastes balanced with the woods extremely well and the smoke produced a dry woody taste in the roof of my mouth and a sharp acidic taste on my tongue. The smoke was creamy and because of the lightness in the draw was coming in easy sips. The overall effect of the third was adult and reasonably refreshing. The second third carried on where the first left off, and as too much of the same thing after 30 minutes became the final third, which with a gradual deepening of the proceeding flavors and the introduction of what I?m going to call a ?general? tobacco taste that rapidly became dominant, the ERdM deteriorated to a point where it in some way reminded me of a less harsh version of a King Edward. The last picture is where I couldn?t be bothered anymore and baled..
Overall: An OK smoke, certainly not a great Cuban or even a good ERdM come to that. At best it?s average and the last two thirds although not ghastly are pretty monotonous and non-captivating.
On the plus side and contrary to Captain Greg?s fears I didn?t have to reach for the draw poker.
Marks. On today?s smoking I?m giving ERdM Lonsdales a 6.8. The Partagas 898 is miles better and still the one to beat.
Next Lonsdales from the list. Montecristo D EL 2005.
