Zig does have a point though. I bought my first Cohibas believing I was buying the best cigars I was ever likely to smoke. Of course at the time I just bought what was available not realising I wasn't just investing in tobacco .... I was investing in TIME.

For quite a while I thought Cohiba didn't come up to the hype. Scotty gave me my first 'aged' Siglo .... now I appreciate the brand, and know to seek out older stock or be prepared to lay in new for some several years.

I still have two untouched boxes of Siglo I's maturing, if I smoked them now the chances are that they'd have a nasty bite. I wish someone had told me about the patience required to get a good smoke (and the finances!) before I started.

Aggi..the Sig I is only a little stick, makes a lot of difference to ageing time wise, open a box & try one every 6mths until they come good!

What's size got to do with anything. Twenty years is the recommended on ERdM Demi Tasse. Fortunately they're OKish ROTB.

If Aggi does the 6 months thing, he'll have smoked nearly half his cab before they come to prime.

Just had a quick look around vendors who quote available box dates on their sites .... not much in Cohiba under 09.

I have to say the Siglo Vs we both tried to puff were at least 9 years old, going by the character of the bands. The others in the range we have no idea how old they were. These were purchased as a sampler pack and I suppose pot luck in what was delivered.

For me Cohiba are another cigar, no more, no less. when they are good they can be very nice but also quite full bodied (which I don't always enjoy). On the whole they don't justify the premium price (apart from construction which is generally very good). However if you want a great Lancero there are only a few choices still made.

I have a few boxes in my stash but are just another good stick, no more no less.

NB - I think most of the EL and Reserva Cohibas are worse than the regular production sticks. The 2003 Reserva selection box is flat and uninspiring on the whole (a couple of exceptions), the Sig VI Gran Reserva great but no better than a regular 2003 Sig VI, the 2004 EL sublime boring, the 2006 Pyrimid confused.

The Sig V particularly gets a very mixed response's/reviews. The even number Sig's work best for me (II, IV and VI).

ERdm Demi Tasse for 20 years..huhh! Lovely little smoke, but same as the little Siglo I does it have the size & body to develop the diversity we'd be looking for in a cigar that smokes really well with just 10 minutes on it?
I presumed (perhaps I shouldn't have) Aggi bought two boxes of 25 which gives him 50 X 6mths...so after the 14th sample he can decide they're not getting any better 'n smoke 'em all at once.....no point in looking around the vendors...he's already bought them!...

Me personally, IV & V with the IV just shading it, IMHO an underated stick in the Siglo line up. Have VI's from '03 which whilst a good smoke always leaves me wanting more...

Of course..but then I won't be able to comment on them when they're 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, ------25 yrs old!

20 years it is Dave (honest). I've two boxes and calculate I'll be 78 when the earliest reaches it's best! Fortunately Simon's (Bolivar) been aging boxes for yonks and let me have one of his 'twenties' .... huge, huge difference.

But joking aside, the age issue is no recent thing. Prior WW2 a gentleman didn't expect to walk into a cigar shop, purchase some smokes and walk out with them under his arm. Instead he expected them to be 'laid down' and aged for him and to be notified by his vendor when enough time had elapsed and they were considered ready to rock 'n' roll. These days we don't really have the patience (or the money) to do that any expect everything to be ready straight away. Truth is, times have changed but cigars haven't, what was characteristically true for them 70 years ago is still true today .... the little buggers need time to do their funky thing and aren't ready until they're ready!

Usually IMHO a difference, not always a marked difference as with the Cohiba's but genrally enough that a lot of us would prefer to smoke nothing but aged.....

You're right I have 2 full boxes of 25 Siglo I's. However I'm smoking my RASCC for the most part (still got heaps of them) while the Cohibas lay down. After Christmas and I've bought everyone else their presents I might have enough money left to buy another box of Siglo's. Within a couple of years I'll hopefully have a steady supply of 2-3 year old Siglo I's.
So once my RASCC are gone I'll start sampling the Siglo I's (which I should have a nice stock of by that time).
