On holiday with the family at the moment. One of the pleasures of a 2 year old (and Mrs monkey) is they both like a 2hr sleep mid afternoon. This gives me some quality time to relax and smoke some great sticks that deserve a little considered time. My routine for holidays is I load up the travel-dor with a selection of once-a-year and everyday smokes.
First up was a 70's Upmann Lonsdale given to me by Simon Chase at some point this year. I am going to have to paraphrase the story (sorry Simon) but something like this...
'It's about 1980. Old man Freeman calls me into his office. he says "try one of these lad" and passes over a box of Upmann Lonsdales from the vaults. We both light one up and we then enjoy the inevitable silent period of a great smoke.'
The story goes that they both put down several boxes (cases?) there and then and very few of that batch went out for sale.
To the cigar. Colorado wrapper, very clean and smooth, Square box press with a slight split in the foot. General condition excellent.
This was 90 mins of cigar heaven. Pure Upmann profile, toasty butter, almonds, hints of coffee. Vivid flavours, unbelievable for a 40 year old stick. I would imagine these can carry on for decades yet. Lingering, plenty-full, creamy smoke. Draw was a bit easy so being an old cigar I sipped at it so as not to overheat and spoil the wonderful balance.
The smoke was thick and creamy and seemed to envelop the cigar (and the smoker) in creamy velvet goodness. This was one cigar I just didn't want to end.
In the evening I smoked a '08 Siglo II and whilst perfectly fine it was very poor in comparison.
Many thanks Simon for a truly memorable smoke.
