Appearance: This is quite an attractive stick. It has an oily almost maduro wrapper with minimal veins and a well applied cap. The plain gold band looks elegant and the cigar feels firm but springy to the touch with no hard or soft spots.
The pre-light draw reveals a barnyard aroma with a hint of bitter-sweet coffee.
As soon as I fire it up, I?m amazed by how much smoke this small stick produces. The draw is very open and it belches out smoke like a factory chimney. I immediately detect the flavours of black coffee, leather and bitter cocoa, with pepper in the retrohale. But while there's no lack of flavours, they remain muddled and mixed up rather than sharp and distinct.
The body is medium and the strength is medium to strong. In the past, I?ve always found Davidoffs to be too mild for my taste, bordering on bland. But this stick comes with a bit of a kick while remaining smooth throughout. The bitter-sweetness goes well with my black coffee and the cigar never burns too hot despite the small ring guage. The burn, however, is fairly uneven and requires regular corrections. This interrupts my smoking and becomes increasingly annoying.
Following the lead of the more experienced reviewers on this forum, I normally split my reviews into thirds. But I don?t think that this cigar deserves such detailed treatment. The flavours remain exactly the same all the way through until a slightly unpleasant bitterness creeps in towards the end and I decide to put it to rest. To be honest, even though it?s so short I?m already bored half way though. The sheer volume of smoke just emphasises how muddled and unexceptional the flavours are.
I?ve met a few people who remind me of this cigar. They are pleasant, well-mannered and completely inoffensive, but I still try to avoid their company. Despite having no good reasons for disliking these ?nice? individuals, I find myself making excuses whenever they want to meet up and then feel guilty about it. I feel that I should make an effort to like them, but to be honest I just find them boring and tedious.
The Davidoff Puro D?Oro is like this. It?s fairly well constructed and tastes pleasant enough, but apart from the fact that it?s stronger than most Davidoffs there are no real surprises. There is zero progression and definitely no ?wow factor?. Spending 40 minutes on this cigar is a bit like sitting in the pub with a very nice man who manages to bore you to tears with his step by step descriptions of his day working at the income tax office. You don?t want to be rude so you just switch off, smile and nod along. For this reason, I can only give this stick a score of 67.
The best cigar reviews are written by people who either love or hate what they?re smoking. When someone is genuinely excited by a cigar, their enthusiasm comes across in their writing and affects the reader. And it can also be very entertaining when a reviewer pours scorn and contempt on a smoke in their review. But an average cigar will never result in a brilliant review and this stogie is as average as they come. So this review is probably the written equivalent of me just shrugging my shoulders. If you?re bored of reading this then please spare a thought for me ? I still have another four of these sticks to yawn my way through. Meh!
Reviewing is a lonely pastime Crusse, made even worse when you're carefully selected stick turns out to be a bummer. The hardest thing sometimes is sticking with it to the end. You really want to hurl it down the garden, but because you've started a review you feel you're in some way obligated to finish it.
