    Por Larranaga Panetelas

    Size - 127 x 37
Smoke Time - 45 mins (taking my time)
    November 2011

Appearance: A very slim rustic looking cigar, not ugly by any means, with a medium-dark brown coloured wrapper which was slightly oily looking, with some small light veins. It had a wonderful aroma of sweet dark chocolate and antique wood, muskiness about it, and was finished with a nice gold band.

Construction: Was good, smooth to touch not too firm and spongy when compressed, i would say it was slightly over humidified than what i normally like, and the draw was a little tighter than i prefer, but good enough to smoke. It produced a good amount of smoke for a smaller stick, and burnt even almost right the way through the whole cigar, with only one correction needed in the final third, no relights required.

Flavour: Pre-draw it was a little earthy and woody, with some nutty taste, surrounded with bitter dark chocolate and mild spice.
For me it was a little bitter from the start of the stick, which settled down after a few draws, then there were some nice earthy and sweet woody tones coming through and overtones of spice and nut, the stick had really started to take off now. It was putting out lots of spicy flavour and was filling the room with a wonderful sweet aroma, which was powerful for a slender cigar of this size.
Going into the second third i was getting similar spicy flavours as in the first, but now i was tasting much more dark chocolate with hints of coffee on exhale. At times it shifted back and forth between the spice and sweetness, and i was detecting some floral and woody notes with touches of black pepper now and then, great mix on such a young stick.
Going towards and into the final third it was still producing lots of flavour, nutty, spicy and chocolatey with some unexpected notes of caramel, honey but not too much. It held some earth, leather and wood tones for a short while, but then cappuccino sprung to mind, with some dry musky flavour and a nice burnt coffee and walnut taste on exhale. Towards the end of the stick the spiciness tailed off somewhat and it was becoming much sweeter, with honey and caramel more prominent, there were notes of wood and nut present, and i don't know what it was, but suddenly i detected red wine and some chestnut with an almost autumn leaf like aroma, it tasted superb and was very pleasing. Almost at the nub of the cigar, slightly hot, it finished very sweet , with some leather and slight grassy notes over toned with some coffee beans, leaving the room with a long lasting aroma of sweet muskiness.

Overall: I could not fault this cigar once the first few bitter draws had passed. It was young but still produced an amazing amount of flavour and managed to fill the room with lots of wonderful aroma. It was a slightly rougher-dryer smoke than i usually like, but this did not spoil the sweet experience at all, as i think it's what gave the cigar, real character. It was rolled and constructed well, and for me was a medium bodied cigar which drew well and held a greyish ash most of the time. I will say, this is one you must try if your looking for a quick short satisfying flavourful, aromatic smoke.
A nice slim stick to have in the humi...

    Thank you SmokinE....

All points considered, the panatela is a better young cigar. It's sweeter, more "supple", smoother, etc.
The problem is, again, the consistency: it's a short filler cigar, and a liga composed of short filler is subject to variations. And it's a morning, or ap?ritif, or tea-time cigar, it doesn't have the strenght of a good PC.
My last box, from '09, was garbage…

Nice review as always.I nearly went for a box of these on my last order as a cheap and cheerful,Sunday morning type smoke.

              great review!
does the fact it's a morning / early afternoon smoke, with relative complexity make it a good starting cigar?

I love the Montecarlos but never tried the Panetelas.

Well I just finished the first one of these from a Nov '11 box.I can't review it as such because I wasn't really in that mode,as it were, just looking for a nice quick smoke at the end of a trying day. That said,I'd agree with most of what's been written here.Summing it up very quickly,I'd say that I found there to be a lot of sweet nuttiness to it with a very light undertone of spice. An agreeable smoke that did the job I asked of it very adequately.I'll be interested to see how the rest perform as time goes by.
