Drew Estate Liga Privada #9 Series ??Flying Pig?
    Size: 4 1/8ins x 60
Smoke time: 1 hour 20 mins.

Source: Gift bomb cigar from Ron and Zilla. (Age unknown.)

I?m a little worried about this review, because my findings echo nothing I?ve previously read on this cigar. Ron gave me the Flying Pig during Summer 2010, so I?m thinking it may have been from the initial release and that the blend may have been modified subsequently and that my cigar had little in common with the #9 Series Flying Pigs reviewed by Cigar Inspector et al.

Appearance: Abnormally squat and fat and finished with a curled pigtailed head this cigar had a medium toothed, very dark (Oscuro) and oily wrapper offset with the neat but unusual band which features the Liga Privada script on the front face and the silver lion logo on the back.

Construction: The cigar felt well packed with a gentle degree of ?pinch? along the barrel. First job, get past the pigtail, which I did with nail scissors before presenting the 60 gauge to my Cuban Crafters. Both the pre-draw and smoking draw were easy although some work was needed getting the cigar over its initial hump. The burn wasn?t the greatest but that isn?t unusual with figurado shaped cigars. The light grey ash though often ragged stayed compact and firm. No re-lights required.

Flavour: The pre-draw aroma was very intense, grassy slightly animal with cocoa and something between menthol and pistachio. OK, I can already hear your disbeliefs, ?Menthol, you sure?? Yes, but very faint, not as in a cigarette more like that in a Vick inhaler. And, I?m going to stay on the aroma for a moment, it was as equally strong from the from the head, so-much-so that it could be picked up every time I went to draw a puff. The starter flavour surprised me, it was Cubanesque, slightly sweet, slightly citric with hints of sweet ?salad? pepper all resulting in a clean refreshing taste in the mouth. And so the cigar happily chugged along, the sweetness never receeded and in the second third it was joined by a very complimentary leathery ?spiced? woodlike taste. The resting smoke was nicely aromatic and the menthol easily picked out. In the final third the leathery aspects became more somber and sweetness became slightly soured but as equally delicious. Towards the end the cigar did let itself down a little, burning both ?hot? and tarred and that?s where I left it.

Overall: I enjoyed the cigar. Certainly one I would like to try again, and a cigar I?d have no qualm in offering other BOTL, but with the proviso that I could have exactly the cigar as I?ve described it, which by all other reviewers accounts, I think might not be possible.

Thanks for yet another review there Tipp, sounds interesting, though as you say, not so similar to other reviews I've seen... Also is it just me or is that one ugly stick??
