  • La Escepcion - Selectos Finos

After all the talk about these recently I decided to light up a La Escepcion Selectos Finos, accompanied with a glass of water, to cleanse my pallet after a late chicken and spinach dinner.

Strong start, lots of smoke and lots of flavour which develops after the first half inch. Leather becomes pronounced.A friend thought this would be a re-branded hoyo. This is not a hoyo. At the start I'm thinking this is more like a great cohiba siglo on steroids. It burns with a lovely singed wood aroma.

After an inch its Taking on a p2 profile on the pallet, No pronounced pepper. But lots of strength. Its strong but smooth and clean. No roughness to it at all.

Great construction, it required a touch up after an inch. I was afraid this may be a problem, but it seemed fine after this.

At this point I examined the structure more closely, a smooth wrapper leaf, no pronounced veins. The ash fell twice barely reaching an inch each time.

Seems to get milder toward the midway point, with no pronounced flavours as in the start. Ash holds better. Burn seems awkward, but corrects itself.

The cigar gets even milder after half way and turns vegetable on the pallet. This is where the hoyo profile emerges.

    I liked the start better.

The last quarter brings back some of the flavours at the start but not as intense.

The flavours from retrohaling are great.

This is what a premium cigar should be, lots of evolution and seamless changes in flavour make this one to try at least once. Far from a unique, I've tasted these flavours before. I'd say these are common flavours found in some of my favourite cuban cigars but the delivery is unique.

It will be interesting to see how these smoke in five years time.

    Smoke time 1hr 15mins.

About 10 mins in, getting a strong start like Kam, interested to see how this develops. Going to take it slow. Loving the band.

I enjoyed the La Escepcion a lot but I didn't experience the same level of evolution that Kam reported. But then my palette isn't all that sensitive. I got dark almost burnt wood at the start which settled down after the first inch or so. I had to re- light a few times. The cigar had a good draw which produced lots of smoke which I like- I hate having to work hard for every puff. This cigar will definitely benefit from a little rest and I'd like to sample more after a few months. Worth a try IMO.

                Ajay's verdict:

12th Feb 2012. Tasted the La Escepcion for exclusive for the Italian market. With me was Steve Insley a member who I ask to join me for a tasting, WOW Steve ...

Nice review its good to see them re-introducing old scrapped brands though i wonder how this lives up to the old la escepcion of the 60-70s.

Quite a bit late to this review (searching the archives tonight), but I wanted to comment on this review by our old amigo, senor Kmart.
I picked up a hand full of these puros while visiting the LCdH in Rome last month. Although the puro is on the mild side, unlike our amigo, I found the flavors to be quite unique...quite unique, indeed

                      But that's just me.

(Hurumph!) What? Was your other hand broken?

Mild!?!? I thought they were a really strong smoke. Dark, strong, earthy flavours...unique as you say though. Never had anything like it

You heard me buster, a mild puro....mild/medium at best!

But I also found it to be a rich stick, full of spice and what's being called by some as "old time" Cuban tobacco flavor. Another word I see tossed about is "character," which is what I found in this puros, yet it smoked so smooth and creamy that it left me with the impression of a mild to mild/medium smoke.
The LCdH owner agreed....BUT WHAT THE FUDGE WOULD HE KNOW!

I will agree with you on one point - I never had anything like it.

(Hurumph!) You call that a review? What the hell do you know about fine puros, BB?

Ummm, BB! One of your fingers seems to be stuck in the UP position.

Right! The better to express myself, my boy.

TJ - if you smoked yours in Rome as I did it would have been far to wet (for me at least). This considerably masks the complex flavours available.
