  • [NON CUBAN] AF Don Carlos Robusto

Well this is going to be the first of about five reviews i plan to put up over the week end as i honestly have nothing better to do.

So ever since i got my package from foxs ive had a run of bad luck with my NCs the lewis martinez i use as my fishing cigar have turned crap they where never good to being with but now they taste like dung and cardboard wont be getting them again and the oliva G robusto i had decided to tunnel right down the middle and really kick me around afterwards even on a full stomach i still got the mcsweats and mcchills and the mcsick feeling all in all not happy by this point.

So today i decide to see if the third times the charm and i go for the Arturo Fuente Superior Don Carlos Robusto ive been eyeing up (at least i think thats what it is as it came in a 3x sampler thats now removed from foxs website so i cant be sure though the size matches)

First thoughts - Well my smoking companion is taking up 3/4 of my bloody sofa the lazy sod but its a nice looking stick with a sweet almost honey tasting tobacco (i wet the cap before cutting) its well constructed has a great draw to it so things are looking up.

Now i did find this cigar didnt change much throughout the time i was smoking which was fine with me as i was loving it lovely sweet smoke like sugar and honey with light cedar wood, nuts and milky coffee throughout all the way to the end.

The burn was immaculate never needed to be touched up the ash was almost perfect white and held on for a good 3 inches before neatly ashing itself onto my crotch as is usual

All in all it was GLORIOUS for a NC i smoked it way down past the band which is something i only ever do with a few smokes like the partagas SDN4/boli GM or connie 1s.

So yeah buy some even if you dont like the idea of NCs when you can buy cubans you wont be disappointed.

Next review will prolly be the offending oliva g robusto.

Arturo Fuente are very sound smokes indeed and always worth a try. Then add the "Don Carlos" and the bar is raised even higher.

Next up, promise yourself that you will try ....
      1) an Arturo Fuente Anjeo 77
      2) a God of Fire Don Carlos Robusto or Toro

I reckon those are the pick of the litter, with the AF Hemingway Short Story as a regular go-to shorter smoke.

Im not 100% sure it was a don carlos but going by the size and price i think it was but what makes the "don carlos" better than the normal ones (yeah i dunno much about NCs) and the sampler said it would be a short story but i guess they either mixed it up or run out.

I still have a anjeo maduro 50 to try and looking at cgars the 77 is only available in boxs of 20 which is a shame as i dont have ?400 to spend atm though they do have "between the lines" available which i hear good things about.

And ive been thinking to get a god of fire ever since i saw a pic of it on here but it looks like foxs is all out..shame

The Don Carlos is named after the patriarch of the Fuente family, and is a special blend, using 10 year aged tobacco. They are released in limited quantities due to the rarity of the tobacco used.

The "Short Story" is from a different, more readily available line called the Hemingway, which is still at the upper end of their production. "Between the Lines" and "Best Seller" are also from the Hemingway line. This line all have a perfecto shape and the same blend, but may taste slightly different due to the size and proportion of filler to wrapper. They are wonderful cigars.

The Anejo (meaning "aged refined") have the tobacco aged, and then refined in cognac barrels for six to eight months. They are rare and more difficult to obtain. Your Anejo 50 will be a great smoke. Save it for something special.

The God of Fire comes in two basic blends. The Don Carlos and the Carlito. The latter is more spicy. I prefer the Don Carlos. A very limited number of boxes are produced each year. Shown below is the insert from my new box of 2008 Don Carlos Toro which shows the November 2011 releases. Note that most are aged 3 years before release, so the current release is of the 2008 cigars.

Most of the other Arturo Fuente cigars available in the UK (labelled simply "Arturo Fuente") are of a less expensive more generic line, and which are produced in much larger quantities. Quality is still very good indeed but not in the same league as those mentioned above. I wouldn't turn my nose up at any of them though!

I am heading over to the USA next weekend, and of course I shall bring back my limit of 50 cigars. They will most probably include a box each of one of the AF Hemingway line, and a box of AF Don Carlos. Out of the thousands of different cigars available over there, that should tell you something.

          Cheers

            Afterthought:
I don't think that the one you smoked was a "Don Carlos". That has a black line at the base of the band, where your photo shows a gold (or green?) line. It wasn't a "Hemingway" line either, as they are perfectos.

I think yours was one of the "standard" Arturo Fuente line. If you liked that, then you are in for a real treat when you try one of the other lines above.

            Cheers

I too am susceptible to the "whitey" some Cigars can impart, even after a big meal i will always drink something sweet to go with a more powerful Cigar ( a tip from Nic Wing that helps, cheers nic), Don TJ posted a while back about Ammonia in the Cigar being a cause of feeling poorly when smoking.

Ill try that next time joao thanks for the tip.

It would of been good to know a year ago after smoking a nub (the one with the white label) on a empty stomach while drinking several glasses of wine and extra dry martinis the results wernt pretty.
