Short Winter Smoke No. 30 (That time of year again I'm afraid).

I have tried these in the past and liked them, but on several occasions found them tight-to-plugged. However, in some thread or other this year SmallClub gave them a reasonable ?thumbs-up?, so having missed them out of my 2010 Short Winter Smoke reviews, I thought the little RyJ was overdue a return.
Appearance: Squared in the box, with a rich brown, slightly rustic wrapper carrying one or two light spots. The cap wasn?t the best applied I?ve ever see, but as it was coming off anyway...
Construction: Pre-draw resistive. Tight smokeing draw, but manageable enough to escape the wrath of Christine?s crochet needle. Burn, started straight as a die and never wavered. The ash was compact and firm. No re-lights required.
Flavour: Quintessential RyJ. The pre-light aroma was earth/grassy tobacco. The initial flavor had a nicely dry deep, caramel sweetness with a clean, floral/citric edge. As the smoke progressed the caramel eased back slightly and the citric notes became sharper and more zesty. (The sweet vibrance coated the roof of my mouth and tongue, and is still with me as a delicious aftertaste). Towards the end of the first third the citric lemony taste softened to become more sodalike and was accompanied by a sour underhint akin to pear drops. At around the half point the sweet tastes became dryer as a, starting first mild and becoming increasingly more intense, woodiness entered the taste mix. Into the final third, and still retaining sweetness the wood notes cleanly changed and smoothly evolved through earth into leather. In the finale I could also pick out some fleeting but totally delicious salty chocolate flavours. A wonderful little smoke IMHO, my only grumble is that I didn?t pick out any of the mild pepperiness sometimes associated with this vitola.
Overall: Great little Cuban, a perfect pavement cafe companion. I?ll certainly buy more and have no qualm about recommending them to fellow BOTL. Flavourwise I think the Petit Julieta separates the ERdM and the La Hoyo but is slightly let down by the sometimes tight draw, allowing the Du Marie that little edge on construction.

I personally would put the ERDM DT well ahead of others in this vitola, especially with their aging potential. I can't say I've ever noticed the Petit Julieta improving much, so I guess if you haven't the patience for aging then the R&J is a decent smoke. On the other hand I have had more tight draws with the Hoyo du Maire than anything else.
