    H. Upmann ? Half Coronas
    Size: 90mm x 44 ? (Petit Coronas)
    Smoke time: 42 mins

    Box date: 2011 Source: www.cgarsltd.co.uk

Appearance: Shorter (see picture with 50p coin), but with a bigger gauge and approximately the same weight as a Perla. Mid brown, slightly rustic wrapper with a neatly applied cap.

Construction: Sturdy, with the cigar feeling nicely compact to the touch. The pre-draw I felt was a bit loose as was the smoking draw. The burn was straight and the mid-grey ash stayed compact and firm throughout the entire smoke needling little in the way of tap-offs (see photos). One re-lights, no corrections.

Flavour: The pre-light aroma was ?light? earthy tobacco. Light up and ... burned tobacco accompanied by something which put me in mind of wet wallpaper. Any Cuban citric ?twang? was totally absent or so light as to be undetectable. The taste in the smoke was dull and offensive, not vegetal, not woody, not earthy and certainly not Upmann. Halfway, and what was and which can only be described as ?tobaccopaste? became even worse! Something vaguely bitter crept into the smoke, something oily with a taste somewhere between WD40 and cheap cooking fat. Into the last third and the cigar went out, the most likely cause being that by this time I was so disillusioned and disgusted with the thing I?d allowed my usual one minute between puffs to stretch even more. The taste on re-light was awful, I carried on for a bit longer, and then review or no review, said bollocks to this and gave up. Absolute Shite!

Overall: On this smoking, a disgrace to the H. Upmann brand and no credit whatsoever to Cuba. On the plus side the cigar burns well, lasts for 40+ minutes and packs a mild to medium nicotine kick, but to be ruthlessly honest, a Guantanamera Compay ? even though it might fall to pieces in your mouth ? has more character and flavour.

I have another of these and will give it a go next year. However, at this point I don?t hold out much hope of exciting or interesting flavours suddenly appearing where there obviously aren?t any.

Wel you are never sure are you ?
    A great honest review

Could it be that these are just going through their sick period ?

Been a while since I've had one that bad ...Hoyo Petit Robusto springs to mind when first released
It'll be interesting to here others comments, I've not tried one yet but will soon

    Thanks for review

It could be Steve, but I would have thought that with this being such a new release it would be to early to be entering a sick phase.

But it seem not an infrequent thing now with Habanos special releases and with 'new year' production vitola. The excuse and idea that we should buy and then wait for improvement is becoming a nonsense .... a bit like Michelin saying 'don't worry, your tyres will be alright when the rubber's cured'! My real worry is that the problem is not in the youth of the leaf, but in the nature of the leaf and that the new hybrid is no longer delivering the general consistency in flavours and ageing characteristics that Habanos intended, and that the old leaf, though disease prone and providing a lower yield was better.

These cigars have been delayed and delayed (due to the lack of the tins that the 5's are supposed to be shipped in) so I can't believe that they are too young.
I have smoked two of these and while I can agree that they are most "un H Upmann like' I enjoyed them and I think they will age nicely and mellow as I did find they lacked some grace and finesse.

I hope you find the second one better, look forward to hearing.

Your wish Nick is my fresh pot of coffee and out into the conservatory ..... but then I wasn't happy with the review either.

          So, second go today.

A great improvement. But still very un-Upmannlike.

          1) Draw more resistive. Smoke less opulent and better for it.

          2) Initial. Dry. Hints of burnt sugar ? Lemsip (not unpleasant) ? cedar.
          3) Middle. Some sweetness ? wood/raisinlike tastes.
          4) Latter middle. Woodlike. Reminisent to the smell of brand new Brio track.
          5) Last third. Bitter tobacco/wood taste. But gentle purging between puffs removes some of the harsh edge. Burns hot if not careful

Overall. Not brilliant but much better. I'll get another next singles buy, keep it for a year and then see how it goes. Box buy? Not yet. All the Perla and Entreactos are still currently far better IMHO.

Apologies for the quality of some of the pics, but it was getting dark and difficult to focus properly.

Smoked one yesterday and i was not very impressed at all, would agree with nick and arf very un upmann like and after upmann being so good for the last few years only added to the feeling of being let down by them

I smoked one yesterday too. These are not sick, just crap. Tasteless non-event, very disapointing.

There may be some good ones out there but what is clearly a huge consistency issue will stop me buying a box :-(

                  Sent from happy tappy tap.

This review has probably led to more single purchases than any other I have read here.
I was heading to the Tatywahey event at JJ Fox and arrived early so I grabed one from Davidoff and sat at Franco and smoked it.

Different from the other two I had smoked, very easy draw this time. Tasty and more powerful that a traditional H Upmann. This was dryer than others I have smoked but then some stores keep their humidors dryer than others.

My conclusion is that is not a world beater, but then I don't think it was put together to be a classic, just a good 20 minute smoke. However, just like the Monte Open what it lacks is age.

I hope that some stock now sits at the distributor for a couple of years and emerges as a tasty little short.

In the mean time I shall stick to Trinidad Reyes as my short morning smoke.

sorry for thread jacking nic, are you suggesting the monte opens are somewhat improved? most folk on here likened them to guantanemaras and reckoned they were a mistake on habanos sa's behalf! are the monte opens worth trying now

Psssst, promise you won't tell anyone else..... The Monte Open, which waswas rubbished at it's launch, has turned into a really tasty (admittedly light) cigar and the funny thing is that because they got such sh!te reviews when they were launched, the stock in most UK stores is about 2 -3 years old and has matured. I love them but keep it to yourself.

Exactly! Clearly needs to shift some stock!

After having my second one out of three today my final thoughs where "why didnt i just buy 3 partagas shorts instead" maybe its because i already have several cabs of them but i was hoping for just something i could walk round the city with while im out with friends or fishing on the lock at teddington and not really care if something happens to it but thats just impossible.

Apart from the fact you have to smoke it so incredibly slowly to get ANY flavour out of it (something you dont have to do with partagas shorts ill add) but the single worst thing about it is it dosnt taste at all like a upmann the only flavour ive been able to pick out of it is peanut brittle and i hate peanuts.

Just no i take back what i said in another post about these having potential down the line its just so appalling im going to stick to shorts and upmann coronas minor tubos from now on for this kinda smoke at least with that you get upmann taste and a tubo to boot so you can really throw it around.
