Hoyo de Monterrey Hoyo Dark Sumatra
Size: 4.5 x 50 ? (Expresso)
Origin: Honduras
Filler: Honduras/Nicaragua/Dominica (Piloto Cubana)
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Wrapper: Ecuadoran Dark Sumatra
Smoke time: 1hour 10mins Source: Gift bomb from Boss Hogg.
This review is at the request of Boss, who asked for frank and honest thoughts, or in his words a Frankie Sumatra.
Appearance: Not much to see initially as the smoke was almost completely covered by three, very handsome gold and black branding bands and a cedros sheaf. Of what I could see, the cigar looked perfectly cylindrical and the deep brown wrapper appeared to be smooth and finely toothed.
Construction: Stocky and nicely balanced, firmly packed along most of the barrel but (worryingly) more compact at the head. The pre-draw was fine and not tight as I?d been expecting. The smoking draw itself was spot-on. The burn started straight, wavered a little in the second third, straightened and never altered after. The grey/white ash was compact and needed little in the way of attention. No relights, no corrections.
Flavour: The pre-draw aroma was light, musty barnyard at the foot and twice as deep at the head. The initial taste was sweet, vaguely treacle like along with wet hat and some vegetal notes. The cigar smoked along like this until almost the end of the first third when the sweetness took on a slightly more bitter/sweet edge, and to my mind was improved for it. The second third was a smooth, pleasant carry on from the first punctuated with an occasional burst of diluted sugar sweetness. In the final third some more barnlike flavours made an appearance, but only beneath the main flavours mix. The flavours profile I would catagorise as Mild to Medium and consistant throughout the smoke. Not that that?s a bad thing IMO, sometimes I just want to coast with a smoke and not want to concentrate on anything.
Overall: A nice cigar. Light, pleasant flavour ? smooth, creamy, uncomplex ? very relaxing and a smoke I would like to have a few of in the humi. Not at all challenging nicotinewise, which suggests the tobacco may have been aged for some while. Newbee?s Enjoy!
