It?s no secret that I really love the Grandes Espana and Demi Tasse. The ERdM Tres I?ve wanted to try for some while, and this morning being crisp and bright has provided a great opportunity. Discontinued ?officially? in 1999 but still boxed and sold for a few years after, the Tres is pretty HTF other than from EMS sources who still have some stocks. The knowledgeable will be looking at the dates I?ve mentioned with some trepidation ... now we shall see if it?s warranted.

Appearance: Toothy, lightly sheened, mid brown wrapper with one or two veins and finished with one of the neatest applied triples I?ve ever seen on a small cigar. Firm to the touch, with some yielding at the band. The Standard ?A? band itself looked pretty old and beginning to fade and had taken on a green patterner, especially at the back.

Construction: No real burn or draw problems, the initial burn started a little waywardly but quickly corrected itself. The draw was slightly resistive, which I thought was perfect for the gauge. The mid-grey ash stayed compact and firm throughout the session, needing only three tap-offs (see photos). No re-lights, no corrections.

Flavour: The pre-light aroma from the foot was delightful, sweet, fresh, clean and vaguely strawlike. From the cut head the aroma was richer and more haylike and carried a faint ?peppery? edge. Lighting-up was slightly disturbing, but quickly passed into the sublime as the bitter/sweet tobacco caramelisation softened, became slightly salty and was joined by a light but totally delicious lemon citric note holding just beneath. The combination of flavour in the first third was to my mind exceptional, the smoke quality although light had a clean pepper and spice aroma which could also be picked out in retro-hale. Into the second third and the cigar got even better with the lemon citric flavour softening and becoming slightly more sherbet like and tinged by a creamy, almost vanillalike taste which then almost imperceptively and effortlessly slipped into an exploration of delicious woods and then out and back again in alternate progression. The flavors strength for the first two stages I would catagorise as light-medium. In the final third the previous flavours deepen slightly and are joined by dry, toasted tobacco (and you can really taste the high quality). From then on the cigar simply coasted along into a delicious finish. Absolutely brilliant!

Overall: An excellent mornings?s smoke. Poised, balanced and delicious. In common with the Grandes and Demi I believe this cigar has aged exceptionally well despite it?s sad, bad years ancestry. The nicotine strength, as might be expected in a ten year old is negligible and I have no qualm in recommending this cigar to anyone, including newbees, even if for no other reason that they get to experience an older and now sadly discontinued vitola. I have previously reviewed the Partagas, Punch and RyJ in this size .... the others are fuller strenth/flavourwise, but IMHO the ERdM is the best of them!

Yet another aged and discontinued ERdM to stare longingly at.

Sounds like a great smoke Tip.

Very nice review. ERdM do fantastic sticks, but I have only tried the demi tasse as yet and will need to give others a whirl.

I see that you're doing a bit of product placement too with the Cohiba packet. Cheeky!

Another great technical review. I am also a ERDM fan, shame they are being cut back in vitolas.
