  • Lanceros Review No 8

El Rey del Mundo ? Grandes de Espana
    Size: 192mm x 35 ? Delicados
    Smoke time: 2 hours

Box date: Unknown. Gifted by Simon Bolivar. (Si did tell me but I forgot to make a note).

Appearance: Not the most beautiful of the lancero, but elegantly slim and perfectly cylindrical with a ?toothed? honey brown wrapper with light veins and the odd green spot or two.

Construction: Almost a perfect ten, whoever rolled it really knew their stuff. The only issue I had occurred in the last half of the final third when the stick developed a side-burn and became difficult to hold onto. One re-light, no corrections. (The re-light was due to an interruption from some call-centre arsehole wanting to take over my Broardband).

Flavour: The pre-light aroma was light, musty earth and tobacco. The first puff was not what I expected, not earthy or peppery but a clean relishlike taste, vaguely floral, vaguely chutneyish and as the smoke left my mouth I could pick up sharp/sweet end note, I was also getting a counter of saltiness on the lips. The smoke quality was silk smooth and remained constant throughout. A half inch or so in and the familiar Cuban twang arrived followed by a light woodiness that I?m going to describe as cedarlike. The balance and subtlely was totally delicious. As the third progressed to it?s end the citric fruitiness and wood increased in power and that point the overall flavour strength I would catagorise as being medium. The second third carried on pretty much from where the first left off, with the plus that I could pick out the occasional hint of honey and light chocolate. To be honest I just smoked along in mellow contentment. In the final third the tobacco power increased, (quite significantly in the last half of the third). The wood flavours began to dull away and were replaced by richer chocolate notes, but always with a light, mild sweetness beneath. Wonderful!

Overall: Probably one of the most complex and enjoyable cigars I've ever smoked. Give me a sunny afternoon, a Grandes Espana and Rimsky-Korsakovs? Scheherazad playing in the background and I think the cigar experience would be about as close to religious as it could get. My only discomfort was the lack of the expected pepper. This may in some way have been due to the cigars ?age?. But only Simon will be able to input on that.

Verdict: Close, so very close. The Monte was brilliant, but on this smoke the Grandes gets the nod.

As always, another good bit of reading.

I did wonder why you were sporting the jacket on such a sunny day.

Great review bud, I don't articulate on paper/ post that well, but even in my own head I don't come close to being as descriptive as your good self. I'm using your reviews as a guide to help me pick flavours from my pallette so keep em coming

I've got cigar envy... what can I say?
                      Excellent review (as always).

Wish I could play 'supermarket sweep' with your Humi's old boy... I clearly need to broaden my (sampling) my horizons.
(Coughs) Don't suppose you've got an LGC's you wanna trade..? Por Larranaga's..? Juan Lopez..?

                      I'll get my coat.

Wonderful review Arf, apologies for my late input but I have been traveling since leaving the rig.
This stick was one from a 2001 box, which I brought in Spain 2006. I brought one, loved it went back & brought the rest of the box. I did manage to secure a further half box from the same batch the following yr, same supplier.
My scoring is also a by a narrow margin, Monte No1 88 & ERDM Grande 89. To be honest this difference was made up on the 'value' score, as I paid E6.5 for the Espana & have never paid less than E11 or 12 for the Monte.
I do love the Monte profile & the format too but I have to agree I don't think you could describe the Monte No1 as a complex smoke but the Espana can be. As prev mentioned I believe it really needs the best of conditions to shine as the flavours can be really delicate but they are there for those patient enough to find them (can't believe you answered the phone half way through!)
As you know I am a great ERDM fan & this is the hidden gem of th ebrand that has passed so many by. If you get the chance (you'd probably need to do a split share as they rarely seem available as singles) to try one with 5yrs on them & I would expect you to be suitably rewarded.
The most amazing point of the review of course, is finally you have been unmasked! Is it just me or is your avatar actually looking older then the real life you? Perhaps it's was a ploy to add gravatis to your review section. Lets see more of you, with the sticks you're reviewing in future. I am a rather shy chap by nature but have have battled through in the interests of presenting slightly more interesting snaps.

Great review there. Of all the reviews I have read on this site it's the ERdM ones that stick in my memory. They sound so up my street but it's a shame that the range has been reduced so much. I have recently scored a box of Demi Tasse so I'll be looking forward to them in about 20 years! Apart from that the only other option is the Choix Supreme and I don't hear great things about the current production.

Hmmm....this almost counts as an "emoticon," senor private el Kat and may warrant a promotion. I'll be keeping an eye on your posts.

(Ahem!) Nice review, senor TripleXXX. Catalina Joy wants you to leave the photo. She thinks you're a handsome lad. But then again, she used to have a little crush on young stevietheloney
