I swear to you this thread is not gonna be political at all

Anyways, I was just wondering this after being kindly rejected in offering Pete a Monte A or Bolivar "I don't know" because of 'Er Majesty's Border Patrol's regulations. How would one send a parcel of tobacco to residents of the UK?
I was first thinking this when I saw CigarSam run out of sticks. Wanted to send him some Monte 4s and my Partagas P2 (got three of the P2s and didn't like em much. He'd enjoy more than I would
Something did stop me, and that was the shipping. But now i'm willing to pay the $15 or $20 but i'm not sure if HMRC would strike me down and gauge my pockets for being a tad too generous......

It's the charges CigarSam would incur if you didn't sort out the taxes first. I have been stung like that buying a lighter from eBay where the charges doubled the cost of the purchase. Although a couple of sticks should be ok as it's obviously not bulk buying. And I think under a certain cost and weight customs aren't bothered .

This link explains the rules for sending tobacco as a gift (the information is about a third of the way down the page) - from what I can gather you can send up to a certain amount and value without needing to pay excise duty or VAT, but I think there are some other charge that come up (such as a handling fee from the Royal Mail)

How you go about declaring everything is something I don't know! To be honest the more I read up on this the more I think I would contact them directly to clarify the rules and my plans before sending/importing, there always seems to be something else that pops up!!

It'd a very nice thing you're trying to do mate. Unfortunately the customs laws make this quite a tricky thing to do. I know of UK guys being bombed from overseas and having to pay hefty fees which is a shame when a charitable act turns out like that

A couple of sticks from here or there..as a gift...can't see the harm & don't think HMRC would either..if they get charged or seized that's a risk you take.
Not condoning boxes & cabs....but for a couple of personal smokes I can't see a problem...

          P.S..it is political & always get's out of hand..that's why it's a barred subject...

I have a good mind to call them back and ask why we employ them?

Thanks too sheepy for Shepherding me to this :

                  START QUOTE
Value Added Tax (VAT) - Import VAT is charged at the same rate that applies to similar goods sold in the UK and applies to commercial goods over ?15 in value, and on gifts that are over ?40* in value. However, please note that commercial consignments sent to the UK from the Channel Islands do not benefit from any relief of import VAT. The value of the goods for import VAT is based on the:
                  basic value of goods, plus
                  postage, packing and insurance, plus
any import (Customs or Excise) duties charged.
As with customs duty, the cost of postage is excluded from the calculation for VAT on gifts except where the sender has used the Express Mail Service (EMS) as opposed to a standard mail service.
*Please note this limit will reduce to ?36 with effect from 1 January 2013.
                  END QUOTE

I won't comment on the tax bit as it made no sense to me at all (possibly because I'm coming to the end of a long day!), but having looked on a particularly famous specialist shop's website you are looking at just under ?26 for the Montecristo No. 4 and Partagas P No. 2 (this includes VAT)
