I've just smoked a fantastic Magnum 46, but as I added the stub to the month's "cemetery" I wondered if I was really getting maximum value out of them. If you look at the pic. it seems that I've pulled the plug too soon - but I always find the smoking too harsh and bitter beyond the final third or so. I wonder if perhaps I tend to smoke too quickly, and more tar and toxins are drawn into the stub. I can't remember ever smoking a stick down to the nub. Or am I about right? Opinions welcome!ALIM0153.jpg

Possibly you're smoking a bit to quickly. Use your watch to time your intervals between puffs. One minute seems a long time, but it gives the cigar time to burn away unwanted gases. Tar in the stub is usually the result of pulling to hard or to quickly.
But not to worry. I often leave stubs like yours, if I'm not enjoying it I toss it. Simples! If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I agree that you may be smoking just a shade to quickly, nothing too drastic. I rarely nub a cigar anymore, despite having noticed that my smoking speed has reduced quite a bit over the last year. I generally go a little further than you (I almost always have to remove the band).
I think tippexx's suggestion is a neat little idea. Whilst I've never timed myself (and certainly wouldn't do so as a regular thing), I suspect that the results might be an interesting little eye-opener.
Anyway, you're in good company... The great (and often deranged) Zino Davidoff once said that one should never smoke more than half a cigar...

If I don't make it past the band I normally come away thinking that I didn't really enjoy the cigar! The Monty and Sancho Panza only look half smoked Tipp's advice is good, make sure you set aside enough time for your smoke and treat her gently.

A slower more leisurely approach has reduced the harshness i used to encounter, also letting the stick rest for 5 mins seems to help later in the smoke, all this and more from the this hallowed place.
