In my admittedly minimal experience with NCs, I've found them to be less complex, less rich and have minimal taste progression compared to Cubans. With an NC, if it starts out nice, that's where it will stay. With a Cuban, you never know how it's going to progress!

That said, NCs are much more consistent and rarely require any rest to approach what could be considered a smokeable state. I think Cuban quality control has definitely improved over the last few years though.

Considering the price of cigars in the UK, I see no reason to choose NC over Cuban. Perhaps in countries where tax plays less of a part of the overall price, I might consider smoking NCs. Going solely on taste, I'd always go Cuban.

I don't smoke cigars more than once a week on average, so when I do have the opportunity I want an experience, a luxury. In the same way, if I was going to buy a bottle of champagne, because it's a rarity I won't buy 'Tesco Value' I'll buy something I know I'll enjoy!

NC's are good but you only get that kick at the back of the throat feeling with a good Cuban and believe me, I have tried most brands of Cubans and non Cubans over the past 16 years including many vintage and aged ones. Soil is the answer to why they are different as has already been said.

When I want to celebrate something special, or even just to relax and chill out, it will always be a Havana I will reach for

But it got me thinking about something, I will use Romeo y Julieta as an example, everyone talks about Cubans being the "best" but in 1954 ( I think) the family who owned RyJ left Cuba and travelled to the Dominican Republic, they took with them their seed, their best staff and their knowledge.

Everyone to his own taste: if you prefer Dominican cigars to Cuban cigars; smoke them by all means but please PU LEEZ don't start with the 'all the best cigar makers left Cuba' argument.

The 'family who owned RyJ', like many of the factory owners were just the latest in a long line of business people who owned cigar factories in Cuba. Don't believe all those ads in US cigar magazines showing some ex-Cuban who claims his family is making the same great cigars they once made in Cuba before they were 'forced' to leave. In most cases, the people managing the factories and actually making the cigars in Cuba were the same as those before the government 'nationalized' (stole?) the businesses. 'Took their seed'?? Are they claiming to be tobacco growers, or manufacturers? Don't they know that Cuban tobacco seeds planted in The Dominican Republic grow into tobacco that tastes like... wait for it... Dominican tobacco? It's all about the soil. In any case, Dominican R y Js all have wrapper tobacco from Ecuador or the USA or...Indonesia. (Indonesia??? Get a rope!).

I'll use Partag?s as an example instead. The Cifuentes family had no control over the factory or production for decades before they moved to Jamaica in the mid 1970s and started to make cigars. They make good cigars, but they are NOT the people who were making Partag?s in Cuba.

Just adding fuel to the fire, you understand. Carry on with the battle.

LOL, I see your point there, I guess advertising is a large part of it.

There is no battle per se, it's just something that I've been thinking about recently, at the end of the day i'm still a total cigar noob, I've had great NCs and really dreadful NCs but i've had great and dreadful Cubans too, some of which I couldn't even draw.

Very true but I can't really justify spending 3 times the amount on cigars which are (to me anyway) not 3 times better.
