  • I have inherited a humidor with cigars in it... how do I ascertain its value?

    hello,

I hope you can help me, I'm a complete cigar novice and could do with some sound advice.

I've inherited a humidor box with approx. 40 sealed cigars in it, and have no idea of its combined value or how to go about selling it. It was my grandfather's and although I have no idea of the age of the cigars I would guess they are approx. 20-40 years old. I am aware, however, that the cigars will not be perfect because the humidifying element of the box will not have been used for some time. The box also contains a boxed metal cigar cutting device (I think!), a small 'bolivar' plastic encased blade, and the original leaflet explaining the humidor box use.

The wooden box has the following written on the inside of the lid:

El Rey Del Mundo Flor De Lancha
    Rafael Gonzalez Temple Hall
    Bolivar

    Fine cigar humidor selection

The box, which seems like it maybe contained more cigars at one time, contains a selection of approx 40 cigars of different sizes and makes, nearly all of which are either sealed in their original wrappers or in screw-top tubes (5 are in tubes)

the names and quantities on the cigars/seals are: napolean marshal (3, tubed), Don John brown (1), Justus van maurik regentes (1, tubed), Ormond Jubilee sumatra extra (2), velasques (1), havana bouquet (3), Lilly (1), Grandee (10), napolean (5), henri wintermans (7), panama (3) and a few sealed but unnamed cigars.

I realise if this is a 'selection' box it probably isn't worth much, but any input would be gratefully received! I am guessing I should just put something like this on ebay/preloved?

    best wishes

    Alex

I think it would be better if you put up some pictures.

I'm not sure you can sell cigars on ebay? The humidor you could though.

As said above, a few pictures would be good. To be honest, the cigars you have listed don't appear to be of the highest quality or value but the humidor may be worth a few quid.

              Hi Alex,

To my eyes there are no stand out cigars there. Also being unhumidified for an unknown period they could well all be unsmokable (not always the case but probably).

These type of humidors come up on eBay quite often but do not have a high value.

I would suggest you put the humidor only up on eBay for sale, it is a breach of eBay rules to sell tobacco and they will remove your listing. If you happen to leave the cigars in some of the picture and people ask you privately if they are included for free that might be ok.
In text only refer to them as 'contents', not 'cigars', if asked be honest with the information about age/storage and see what happens.

Hope that is helpful but the reality is there is nothing here of significant value.

As Monkey has quite rightly pointed out..the cigars are probably not very valuable & the humidor is a fairly standard tobaconist's sales type which could be handy to segregate nasty NC's from the Cuban litter.
As a novice why don't you keep them as a whole & try to bring them back to life with a careful bit of husbandry. Time will tell if they are salvage or scrap an interesting project & good learning curve.
The boxed cutter is a Donatus..made in Solingen - a very popular 'V' & straight cutter in it's time... I still use them today occasionally, dependant on which model it is, it may be worth a few bob, but if still sharp can be very useful.................

Maybe its just me...but surely the only way to deem their TRUE value, would be for you to light them up and see what you think?

Give 'em the "squeeze" test. If they are hard as a rock (which is most likely), you may be able to restore them to a "smokeable" condition after much tender loving care in a well balanced humidor. hug.gif

However, if most of the oils have evaporated, they may not be salvageable...but certainly worth a try.

Names Perro, el Perro, and I'm currently restoring a few H. Upmann Coronitas
that were kept in tubos outside of a humidor for several years.
