  • Interesting Trip to the Local Tobacconist

Well, I decided to quickly pop into the tobacconist in Cheltenham this afternoon as my supply up here is pretty much non-existent. A look around inside the fairly small walk-in humidor showed a somewhat limited range of cigars. As you would expect it consisted primarily of a small selection from the big names such RyJ, Montecristo, Cohiba and Bolivar, with a couple of cheaper smokes thrown in (Don Ramos etc). I was pleased to see a couple of tubed vitolas from Punch and an example a-piece from Cuaba, Quintero and Fonseca.

Something did catch my eye, and it wasn't something I'd expected to see in the store... a Rocky Patel box. There was one remaining cigar, a 1990 Vintage Petit Corona, so I grabbed it. I asked, as it was the last one, if I could buy the box too... Absolutely not! I'm not allowed to sell the boxes (this was from a lady who certainly appeared to be the manager). Apparantly they had been told that they were not allowed to sell the boxes due to the prevalence of counterfeits... God help you if you want to buy 25 from this store... you'd probably get them all loose in the bottom of your bag!

Unfortunately they don't, and won't be, selling any of the more interesting REs and LEs. Though the owner had been trying to get hold of a 'Montecristo Macanudo' for a member of staff as a leaving present. Now, has anyone else come across the Montecristo Macanudo - I'd never heard of it before, Trevor's Cuban Cigar Website doesn't seem to make mention of it, and even Google is drawing a blank.

The strange way that local tobacconists work...

Oh yes, and I also picked up a Eurohike twin jet lighter from Millets. I'd been without a jet-flame lighter for too long, and decided that something cheap and cheerful was needed, and remembered reading some positive reviews of this one a while back.

Punch once made a small vitola called the Macanudo way back pre embargo

A 'Montecristo Macanudo'...Now that would be a bigger marketing disaster than the Monte Open!

I take very little notice of what ill-informed, non-specialist vendors say about cigars.
