  • Price Point. Your long and short of best value.

This isn?t a contest. Nor is it a suggestion that cost should be a prime determiner of choice. I see nothing wrong with anyone paying BHK prices if their smoking taste and preference is for cigars of that quality. To be frank, if I could afford it, I would do it. Taste would be the criteria not the cost.

However, it is possible to find cigars that offer a high degree of smoking pleasure, excitement and experience .... and, which wont bust the wallet. (US BOTL might think my prices shown are a bit high, but please remember we don?t have ?dime store? cigars, nor same variety and selection of Caribbean cigars as the US, and that our higher UK Tax is shown in those prices).

I?ve chosen as my candidates two of my favourite cigars, one short smoke and one longer, both of which I believe epitomize the notion that great cigars do not have to be expensive.

    Short: Montecristo No.5
With the Dippy 5 now gone. The Monte 5 is left as the cheapest of the CC TPCs. Not that that?s very significant as IMHO it was always superior to the Diplomaticos anyway. OK, ubiquitous it might be, but great construction, great tobacco and you can never out guess one, as they always surprise you with something new in the next puff. Not as refined as the Siglo I maybe, but always a terrific cigar. UK box 5 = ?35.99

    Long: Toscano Classico
Not Cuban not even Caribbean, they?re Italian. I have reviewed this cigar and can?t praise it enough, it?s up there amongst the best I?ve smoked. Rokkit too has smoked some, and pretty much shares my opinion that the Classico is a great quality smoke, regardless of where it comes from.
Two other things which put the Classico into the best value band are:- 1) The smoke time. They?re very slow burning and seem to go on forever. 2) They?re double-ended. They can be cut in half, one half smoked the other half humi?d for later if you so wished. UK box 5 = ?20.49 (Mitch I see has put this up a bit, the were 16 quidish last month).

Anyway, those are my ?best value? selections. Over to you guys for your ideas.

    RULES.

Please price in 5s to keep everything level.

NO Gibraltar DF prices if you live in Gloucester.

A little bit of slack allowed to US BOTL if a CC is one of their selections.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

    Short: Trinidad Reyes

Only ?39.00 for 5 on C.gars a hard to beat price for such an excellent smoke.

    Long: Jose L Piedra Cazadores

Only ?27.50 for 5 on C.gars! I don't think you can say much fairer than that can you? I admit I've never tried these and they're on my "to smoke" list (I only have one pair of lungs!) but most opinions have been very positive concerning these.

Por Larranaga Petit Corona is delicious. ?44.50 for 5 if bought on cgars... in this case i'd probably go with the Reyes though.

(Having said that, the cab that just arrived from canary islands works out at ?2.28/cigar which is an absolute bargain).

JLP Cazadores used to be a Euro a pop, I tried to like them, I tried the whole range but just couldn't take to them. The only smokeable format IMO, which wasn't available the time is the Petit Cazadore @ ?18.50 for 5 from Cgars. It's the cheapest decent smoke I could find on the CGars site. Infact looking over those UK prices made me wonder how any one can afford to by boxes of 25 of anything over here? For a longer stick I would try the Lonsdale format, ERDM or Dippy No One, both under ?52.50 for 5.

Yes, I've tried all the Piedra marks- mostly when they were machine made I think. I like them, especially when smoking outdoors. In fact I've just been out for a walk, puffing on a very tasty Piedra Breva- one of a 5x5 which I purchased in the Caribbean for $27.50! It was only after buying them that I noticed the "Totalmente a Mano" mark on the outers. Hand made, short filler? I'm happy to keep a supply in the humi, 'cos I'm Scottish and they're cheap

Excellent shout on the ERdM Lonsdale Simon. Another one I would definitely consider in the longer category would be the Dippy 2 - some of the best cigars I've ever smoked have been Dippy 2s.

As for the short of it... I'm going to go non-Cuban on this one. From the Dominican Republic comes La Aurora cigars. I was surprised by how good the Rothschild was when I tried a pre-release, and you should be able to pick five up for under ?40. If the coronas are half as good as the Rothschild, then they would be my ultimate best value short smoke (from ?23 per five).

hard as i try i cannot like the Monty 5, the No4 i love but the 5 always taste bitter.

Short, RyJ Petit Julieta 5 for ?20 ish, and i can get 40 mins out of one, ok so i have asbestos fingers and my arse squeaks when i walk.

Long, Partagas 898 un, ?65 for 5 (2009) but worth every penny, an hour and a half plus of superb.
