  • Time to Move my 'Gars

    Ok gents,

I am packing up my cigars for a 2 month journey to the US. My household items will be moved via ship and that is why the extended time.

I am looking for any additional advice on how to have them survive in the best possible condition.

I am placing them in rubbermaid containers, boxes seperatly from loose cigars. They will have humi care packs and jars from CI inside. The lids will be taped shut. Think that will work?

Anyone know how many packs I need to place with the 'gars?

    Thanks for your help!

So you leaving these shores for good then mate?

If your using the Bovida humi packs I would put about three in each if you can, then at least they can self regulate and should last the couple of months.. Just an educated guess mind..

Fingers crossed tho that they all arrive to there final destination all tip top and ship shape mate..

I did this in the reverse direction 2 years ago with good results. I packed all singles in a cooler as tightly as possible with a couple humicare pillows and silica gel socks and plenty of bubble wrap to keep them from bouncing around. Since the cooler is almost airtight take it easy on the humidification as you won't need much. This should work the same for a sealed/taped rubbermaid container.

For boxes I used a food saver (vacuum food sealer) with large bags and NO humidification. I used about 1/2 the vacuum then sealed it off. If you use full automatic setting you will end up with a 'box press'. If you don't have one see if anyone you know has one that you can borrow as you probably don't want to go back to the states with UK plugged appliance. If not an option then I suggest going with large ziplocks and it should produce the same results. I packed all my boxes in a regular cardboard box for shipment this way and all was fine on the other side and it left Northern Virginia in August when it was still quite hot.

        Good Luck!

I think you need to be very cautious if you are going to send them with humidification. Air tight+humidification+temp swings (plains, trains etc) = mould!

If it were me I would get them to a good humidity, wrap the boxes in clingfilm or vac-pack and hope for the best.

I would never ship anything sealed with a humidification device, better a little dry that mouldy.

Any chance you can take them as luggage, possibly best to buy a large bag & pay the extra charge.
