  • Organic?

    Hi all,

I was having a chat with a friend the other day regarding organic v non organic food stuff and was wondering whether any of you know what the situation is regarding cuban cigars?

Are the tobacco plants grown using any kind of pesticides and/or fertilisers? Not that it's an issue for me really but I was just wondering is some cigars can be labelled "organic"?

Never heard anything on the discussion before in relation to Cigars.

From what I heard in Cuba there is very little chance of Cuban Cigars being labelled organic.

It is a very difficult crop to grow if you consider that the leaves need to be unblemished (especially the wrapper leaves)

My nana once said to me "I don't understand what all this organic food is about. We never had organic food when I was little"... She was born at the start of the 1900s. I said that I thought pretty much all food was organic back then as even though there have been pesticides used for thousands of years they were all probably derived from organic sources.

In a really hard core nerd kind of way I'd be interested to know more if there are any farming historians out there.

I imagine that Havanas are the most organic cigars made, purely on the basis they can least afford expensive fertilizer & pesticides.

You only need to see the offices of two large European chemical companies near El Laguito to figure that there is quite a lot of stuff going on.

I've had a quick browse on t'internet and found a brand called Plasencia which apparently produces and sells organic cigars. Never heard of them.

… and before that, I believe they were provided by the USSR in fertilizers, pesticides, etc. I don't think the vegueros can afford to have an ecological conscience or environmental concerns…
