  • How long did it take you to develop your "nose"

    Hello All,

    Firstly apologies if this is a daft question but;

    When i read cigar reviews etc there is always mention of the flavours and smells coming from the cigar before it is lit, "I'm getting leather and vanilla and heather etc"

    So far all I can smell is tobacco

    I appreciate that it will take time to be able to distinguish these different smells, how long did it take others to develop this skill?

    It's taken me 43 years to grow my nose to it's current state. My palate & olfactory senses however woke up after about 6 months and are still developing years later.
    What would I know? I'm just a backwoods roo packin crim from New Holland! LOL. (Thankyou El Cat)

      Don't be put off too much by the so called 'experts'. Between you and me I think that a lot of what they say they can taste is rather exaggerated.

      Don't get me wrong...I'm not calling them pretentious bast**ds or anything.

      Anyway, try not to worry about it too much and just enjoy you smoke. Cheers.

        Have to agree with Jacob i sometimes can pickup the smells better from others cigars when im not smoking.Though you get to know what you like after a year i guess, by the time you do you're probably broke trying.

          Hm I think it took me a good year (and a heck of a lot of cigars) before I could start to describe the finer tastes, though a lot of it is very personal and I don't expect others to get the exact same experience as I do.

            Yup, don't sweat it. For a lot of people it is just a 'good stick'. If you taste, you taste ...if not, not.

                I'd say it depends on the cigar, but Montecristos have a definate spicy taste and a good RyJ is very smooth and creamy. The RyJ churchill has a woody taste somewhere towards the middle. However you can get bads cigars of the same brand that just taste like crap baccy or is too tight to draw. Alot has to do with proper storage as much as developing a palate in my opinion. If you don't store them in proper conditions then you'll never get cigars that have a good taste in order to develop the palate with, well that's my opinion for what it's worth anyway.
