Your Beverly Hills "long standing and respected chap" sold you a plugged, overhumidified Hoyo DC; defects that he could have detected if he had a little knowledge in CCs?
I hope he didn't charge you?

Obviously I could never be 100% sure, but I am about 99.9% sure that this isnt the case. Well not about the plugged and overhumidified part. After speaking with the owner Rigo for a while, doing a slight bit of research online, and hearing about him from the top dog at the Grand Havana Rooms, I know that he used to work for Habanos back when it was cubatabaco and travelled the world selling cubans in all the major marketplaces. This along with the fact he owns the sole distributing company of cuban cigars throughout Canada, leads me to believe he at least knows what he is talking about regarding cubans. Im not defending the guy, as Ive only met him twice, but Im fairly certain he didnt give me a dodgy cuban on purpose, and Im also pretty certain it wasnt a fake. As IVe said though I could be wrong.

However I am intrigued. You say these are defects he could have detected had he a little knowledge. How would he have detected this? Im only asking, as I dont know nearly enough to know this, so hopefully you can at least give me the knowledge to avoid this problem in the future!

It sounds like plugging and overhumidification could have been the problem them.

For future reference (and forgive my questions asking as usual, as Im still new around here, with enough to learn!) but is there anyway at all to spot either of these traits before lighting up?

As for overhumidification, exactly how does this work? and how easy is it to spot (and rectify)?


As for the refund, to be honest I have never had this problem with any cigar I had smoked to date. Therefore, and the reason I started the thread, was because I had no idea whether this was human error or fault of the cigar and its conditions. So at the time I actually said nothing and went on my way. I popped in there today very quickly just for a drink as I had a few minutes but not enough to smoke, and I got speaking to the owner once again, and I mentioned about the cigar I had the other day, which he remembered, I told him the problems I had (he did mentioned he had wondered why I left half in the ashtray), and he apologised instantly, and offered me another double corona to take home, as well my choice of cigar from the humidor when Im back in there in a couple of days.

At least a lesson has been learned and hopefully some of you guys will be able to answer some of my questions, and help my diagnose some of these problems sooner next time!

So in the end its worked out well i hope, if you took the DC he kindly offered give it the benefit and leave it in your Humi for a few months. We all keep learning, when the cigar is too wet or over humidified it takes a long time to recover from the pinch test, the wrapper even may feel moist and the end may split if humidified too quickly after a dry period. On occasions if whilst smoking and you have made the end too wet [occurs when in the company of sexy women] i have found if you bite very gently when drawing helps alot, bit hard if you have no teeth. I think the cigars he sold you are good quality but it happens now and then. All the best.
