  • Possible reasons for the worst smoke of my life...

    Hey guys!

So, as a child in terms of experience, I thought I would make a quick post about my smoke last night, and to try and determine whether it was myself at fault, or whether it was more fault of the cigar or something else at play.

So last night, I went to a cigar lounge here in Beverly Hills that I had wanted to go to pretty much ever since I got here. It wasnt however the Grand Havana Room! A couple of miles down the road, is possibly what has now become my favourite cigar lounge in the world. The Buena Vista Cigar Lounge. I will make a little review of the place in another thread hopefully later today! Once I settled with my drink I went for a walk through the humidor with the owner. We got chatting about my regular smokes back in the UK, and with the all being Cubans, he invited me to follow him into a tiny private cupboard area, guarded with a couple of padlocks. Once open, staring at me was a small but wonderful selection of Cubans. As I had already picked a NC to smoke, I thought I would be a bit naughty, throw hell to the embargo, and grab a cuban too! Now this could be problem Number 1. Being that I am in the states, there is always the chance the cigar could have been fake, however, with this being Beverly Hills, and the owner, a long standing and respected chap, I dont believe they will have been....I could be wrong though. So I selected a Hoyo De Monterrey Double Corona. The price I paid was a little high, but being Beverly Hills it was to be expected. Just to note, I have never smoked one of these before, so everything I experienced could just be the norm.

My first real problem came with lighting. Ive always used matches, so picked up a small box of matches and went about it my usual way. However after a few matches it still wasnt catching, so I became a little more aggressive. Finally it lit, and immediately it started to burn so unevenly I didnt know how to balance it out. I gave it some time but it just wouldnt correct itself. Next came the draw. The draw was SO tight, infact, tighter than tight, it felt like I was smoking it through concrete. Almost no smoke was coming through. I had to fight big time with the cigar to get anything out. I found exhaling through the cigar twice and then drawing twice was the only way to get any smoke through.

After my first real draw, the remaining cap cap loose, this in turn lead to the wrapper coming loose a little to start at the head. This also occured at the foot, but I didnt worry about that too much even though it was ever so annoying. I continued fighting and fighting until abut half way through, when the cihar went out. I lit it up again, and for the first time I had my first real draw from the cigar, and it was lovely. However, this was the last. After about another 7 or 8 minutes, and just over half way through, I gave up. After having the least most enjoyable cigars of my life, I left it, and went on to the NC.

So yes, Im trying to work out, if I was in error at at. I have never experience anything like this, and with the cost of the cigar, I would definitely like to limit that happening again in the future, so any advice would be greatly received! If you need any other information to help make a diagnosis, just let me know!

    Thanks in advance!

I hope the US Customs Authority isn't reading your thread

Plugged for sure, possibly over-humidified. I assume you weren't charged?

Sounds like my experience with 25/25 hoyo dcs from an 03/05 box. (can't remember which date)
I steer clear of hoyo dcs post 2000 as none I've had have been very good!

I may be imagining this, but I'm sure I read somewhere that over the pond it is common to humidify the cigars to a stage they term 'wet', I wonder if this was the case ...... then again I could be talking rubbish

Your Beverly Hills "long standing and respected chap" sold you a plugged, overhumidified Hoyo DC; defects that he could have detected if he had a little knowledge in CCs…
                I hope he didn't charge you…

If it was'nt from an established smoking lounge at first it would seem too wet as others have suggested or too young, this happened to me in Gib with a Monte Sublime that the owner had offered as a token i'd never tried one and suprised that it was impossible to draw after all the reviews i'd read but sometimes [not too often] happens the owner didnt hesitate to replace it, i hope the guy in Bev Hills did the same, i wouldnt give him much choice .

What are you basing that assumption on? There have been many cases of badly plugged/unsmokable Hoyo DC's, I am not sure I have ever seen a fake one?

Perhaps it might be good for you to go to Newbie greets and introduce yourself.

Looking at your user name it would imply you are a cigar retailer, can I suggest you read here:

Were the CCs humidified at the same % as the NCs? If so it may account for the tight draw and problems lighting.

its a hand made product it happens, but as others have said any decent shop would change it for you or not charge you, simple

I can not speak for this stablishment, but almost all "cuban" cigars sold in the Los Angeles or Beverly Hills cigar shope are all fake. They are not even good fakes, they are terrible fake which after one or two puffs, I've tossed them away.
