Storing cigar small packs in the Tuppador ....

just a little heads up warning. Check them regularly, I found a bit of mould on an HDM Epi 1 inside a pack this morning. I think it must be the cardboard absorbing and retaining moisture as the tup readings today are 64F 67? which shouldn't really be cause for concern.

...must have read my mind! Small delivery arrived this morning and I was going to ask the question if it's safe to keep them in the packets or best to pop them loose into the humi or spare cigar box in a tupperdor.

On a similar thought... tubos... what's the general concensus, do you store them in the tube or take them out to go in the humi? So far I've taken them out as the tubes are using up space.

If you can, keep them in the humi. I was storing in the packs because it looked tidy and I like the designs .... but, where I've space I'm transferring them into humis.

I always keep mine in the humi 'caps off'. Some cigars really benefit from being Tubos. Bolivar RC for example.

With the tubos, I open them and leave them to settle in my humi. Sometimes, I'll then put the lid back on once I'm sure they've equalised.

In recent years, I've tended to do this more and more often with tubos.
With the cap off, the only point of entry for air (and therefore moisture) is via the foot, and (in my experience) that results in an uneven distribution of moisture throughout the cigar.
i.e. Unlike 'naked' cigars in the humi, the presence of a tube acts as a barrier to the even distribution of air-flow that happens naturally when the cigar is 'naked' in the humi.

Two things invariably occur: a) Cigars have a tendency to burn unevenly (if smoked directly from the tubo) due to the stick not being 'balanced', and b) There seems to be a higher risk of foot damage (splitting) due to moisture ingress from that end only.

I usually take the cigars out of the tubes when I get them, leave them 'naked' in the humi for a month or two (give them chance to re-acclimatise) and then store them for long-term aging 'caps on'.

I have mentioned this several times, be aware that:

airtight containers+humidifying device+temp variation=MOULD

The solution, regular airflow (open at least once a week).

Naked is good IMHO...

My cigars alway go in naked and tubes are only used to transport them

A question or two:

Why pay the premium price & buy tubos only to remove the cap or stick itself?

Why do the producers bother to put them in tubes with caps on (and charge and achieve a premium price) if the cigars themselves are better stored out of tubes, or with caps off?

When you buy tubos do you expect them to have been removed from the tubes & inspected or whatever on a regular basis whilst in storage, at the retailers or wherever?

Once I've got the right sized tubes laying around as spares for transport, I don't think I would pay the premium...

I've generally only got them because I've bought a three pack to sample and non-tubos weren't available. Out of three Mag46 one had gone mouldy in the tube so I'm inclined to at least check them before leaving them for any period of time.

I keep all my tubed sticks, not that I've had that many, sealed in their tubes cos I reckon that's the way they were made to be kept. I do think tubos taste a wee bit more concentrated than their boxed brothers which slight difference could disappear without shelter. Although I accept how they are kept might make little or no difference in the short term, I'm hoping my stock should age better in the longer term.

I had always imagined that being in a tight, sealed, almost airless environment was defence against humidity spikes & mould growth - but seems that I might be wrong. I've certainly never seen mould on a tubed cigar, but then again I've rarely seen mould on any sticks, let alone those in my humi.

The only tubes I've ever kept with caps off have been old ones that have spent significant time out of a humidor and that I've slowly & carefully revived by leaving the caps off for brief periods (now all safely sitting with their caps on until such time as they are to be sacrificed to Prometheus).

I'll seal one up then as I've only had the RyJ Churchills less than a month. That way I'll have one open and one closed so I can possibly compare. Thanks for the thoughts.
