how do you all manage to build up your cigar collections
i keep smokeing them all think i need to invest in a box or a cab for my next purchase

  • #2
When I first started out I used to buy 3 cigars everytime that I went to the shop. One for now, one for soon and the last I kept to build my stock. It took ages until I had a collection.

I bought some from group buys and my first box was a 12 of Trini Reyes about 1 year in.

I'm about 6 years smoking cigars now and have a collection of about 400 and I still have my old habits every time that I go to the shop!
It aint where ya from, its where ya at!

If you are just starting out I suggest you buy singles, I don't smoke regularly and with the exception of one or two I keep coming back to I enjoy many different cigars.

To keep within a budget and to save having to buy another humidor my advice is to work out how many you smoke each week and just buy two more than that until your humidor is full. You wont notice the effect on your wallet that way.!

I'm about 4 years smoking cigars now and have a collection of about 3,000 frickin stogies in 9 (count 'em: NINE [down from a high of 16]) humidorii.

I went a bit berserk and became totally OCD about seegars, Fortunately, over on this <--- side of the pond, we have access to innumerable vendors (for NC's, of course) who are willing to sell you the finest of puros and we don't have to pay the exorbitant taxes/duties/tares that you folks over on that ---> side of the pond have to pay.

So thank yer mum and yer dad for not having set off for the Colonies...

Like most hobbies we start off slow and end up getting divorced

Once you have developed your pallet you may decide you like a few years on your smokes. The way to realise this is to buy to 'age'. It takes a few years (and too much cash) but you will build up a stock and then have ready access to aged smokes all the time. As long as you keep buying and topping up your stash.

Initially we all buy singles and most of us still do from time to time.

Im just kicking off really getting serious about building a collection too so have invested in another humidor which should give me around 100 capacity. I'm going to follow you guys advice and continue to buy singles and maybe from time to time try and pick up a box to push things forward.

I did the same with whisky, bought in two's to keep one and drink one and now i have a decent size collection. The problem is having to buy new cabinets to put them in!

I've found the Forum Sale, Split and Trades to be very handy for picking up a few bargains and rarer smokes!
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

When you've tried a cigar a few times and liked it, buy a box, then leave them alone for at least 6 months if you can. Basically it involves buying faster than you smoke! Singles are generally not a cost-effective way of purchasing really...
