  • Cubans v Non Cubans

    Hey all ,

I'm quite new to this site, so please forgive me as I'm sure this question has been asked many times before..

I've a few friends that smoke only Cuban cigars, who will not even attempt to try cigars from elsewhere. Obviously, this being the UK, Cubans are widely available and probably the most common?

The thing is, on recent trips to the states, I've bought a bunch of different Dominician and Honduran Cigars and I've really been enjoying them. After looking online at the big cigar review sites, I've started to notice that although the BEST Cubans are the best in the world, many cuban cigars are simply just average and cigars from elsewhere rated higher.

While I realise that every man has different tastes, I guess I just want to know if anyone else gets a little annoyed listening to people talking down other cigars when they have likely a limited experience of what they have to offer?

Just had this on my mind! First post!

speaking from my limited expereince with NCs and CCs.

To me, they are just 'different', I don't compare between them, at least I try not to.

They are a bit like new world and old world wine debate.

given the prices of NCs and CCs avialable to me are similar. I choose CCs every time.

    but that's me.

Many varied discussions on this subject, try a little forum search.

For me it's cc's every time.

This discussion tends to get quite heated.

There is a distinct difference between them to me, and I prefer Cubans. Smoke what you want though! There is no 'best' cigar, only what you think is the best.

Well I've been smoking cigars for about 8 months to a year and at the start I thought that NCs were great, cheaper and just as tasty with a pretty huge range avaliable. However as time passed and my palate developed (I like to think!), I have come to the conclusion that what matters is flavour complexity and there are very few NCs that can match CCs in that respect. There are however some great sticks out there like the Oliva Serie V Torpedos and Man O' War Virtues to name but a couple and to not try them because they're not cuban is a bit like cutting off your nose to spite your face IMO.

One of the things that make cigars great to me is the diversity avaliable and that one man's meat is another man's poison. It's part of the hobby to discuss cigars and debate over differing opinions. It's a poor show when people start to take it personally and turn a discussion into an argument.

Umm. Don't listen to monkeyboy, muchacho! I haven't seen a topic here this year that hasn't been discussed before.

That so sweet, chicho knewbee...but give youself a little more time in the humidor...say a few years, before you make such sweeping cuclusions about non-cubans and the Fabulous World of Cigars!!!

As me pappy Pappy Coro used to say "Non-Cuban Cigars are like women, muchacho....you can't smoke all the cigars in the world, but you can sure try!"

Anyways, that's what I think he used to say.

I can draw any conclusion I want and I can revise it if I change my mind at a later date, at no point was I telling anyone else what to think...

I am with you there Styler, your opinion summary was very good and the language was quite inappropriate!

I don't class myself as particularly knowledgeable but I know what I like.

I have smoked most cuban brands and a fair few sizes over the last few years. But I have a more limited experience of NCs, around 3 to 4 months in fact.

However from those I have tried (around a dozen brands in various sizes) I would say that there are definately a few that stand up to the best Cubans I have tasted.

In order I would rate my favourite NCs as

                        1) Alec Bradley Tempus (Imperator or Tera Novo sizes)

                        2) La Gloria Cubana Serie R ( Maduro)

                        3) Oliva O

If I could never smoke a cuban again I may possibly console myself if I had a humi full of these.

Thats just my opinion, saying that, I would rather not have to be in that position.

There are so many wonderful smokes out there, I dont see the point of judging them based on origin. Ultimately if they taste great, burn evenly and offer a few nice suprises along the way what does it matter.

If a Hamlet could ever offer the above I would be down to the local newsagent like a shot...

For me, NC's do spice well, and do strength well. STRONG NC's are good, they are strong. They have a similar taste/spice across many many different brands.
NC's that aren't strong are pointless to me, they don't have finesse, cream or subtlety like light cubans do.
