Seeing T's post about the 'Elephant's foot - 60 ring gauge being rolled by Hamlet at Sautter last week makes me wonder, what is the best ring gauge?

Nub started a trend for fatter cigars and also shorter cigars for us chaps with less time.

So what's the ultimate ring gauge, how chunky can they get?

Sixty is too big. 48-52 is good but I love a good lonsdale.

I was under the impression that the fatter cigars would take longer to burn? I've still not smoked the Nub I received but I thought that was one of their selling points, that even though it was much shorter it would still smoke for an hour (or whatever).

That said, I'm not a fan of the huge ring gauges in general. I find the fatter they are the more likely I am to experience uneven burning. I also have trouble fitting them in my mouth!

For me I tend to prefer 42-52, but I do have to say the fresh elephant leg (from hamlet at Sautter) I had on Saturday night whilst being large... was unbelievably good.

I sometimes think the really large cigars open your mouth in such a way that more of the smoke hits the back of your throat which Isn't as ideal for me as having it gently waft around the flavour parts of your mouth.

Yup got a feeling. Apparently he thinks he may be rolling with the bottom part of bags of tobacco that have been at Hunters for a while... which means the leaf might be nicely aged too.... that might help.

Would be interesting to get a set of vitolas rolled up!

I like 50 upwards.
I love a Petit Edmundo, which I believe is a 52.
A beautiful cigar.
Never been bigger than that.

I'm with BigT and Dave on this - not a big fan of the huge gauges. I'd go 47 as my fave, but anything up to a 52 is fine by me.
