  • Cracked Foot Syndrome

    Hi Guys

I have been noticing that a few of my cigars have developed cracks on the foot of the cigar. The crack is usually on the wrapper and not deep inside and is probably 1cm to 1.5cm in length from the base of the foot.

I cant figure out why they are occurring as all my cigars are in my humidor and i am using one of the Humi-Sticks from Sean which i regularly top-up, can anyone explain why the cracks are occurring?

    regards
    Mo

Humidity fluctuations might cause this. It happens to me now and again but I don't worry about it because it happens at the lit end lol. You should really only worry if the caps split!!

Check the temperature stability of your humidor. Even if you check it every evening and it reads a steady 70RH% if the room is cold throughout the day when no one is at home then you put the central heating on the temperature change will cause the moisture in the humidor to fluctuate as warm air holds more moisture so RH% will drop on cold less so RH% will rise causing the moisture in the cigar to change. The fastest way moisture can get in and out of your cigars is through the foot as it isn't sealed by the wrapper. This causes the tobacco in the foot to swell and shrink which will crack the wrapper.

Try storing your humidor in the most temperature stable room in your house or insulate it the best you can. Last year I put my Mrs best towels (note to self don't do it again without asking lol) over my humidor for insulation and it worked a treat.

Check your RH% at different times of the day if you can to identify if this is the problem. Most digital hydrometers have a min and max recording function. Try reseting by turning it off and on and when you next check it after 24hours see the range of your readings.

Funny you should mention that, as I have two cigars with splits in the caps - caused by problems with my RH over the last few weeks that heve (thankfully) abated.

Why is it bad? My view was that it made the smokes look a little unsightly, but since it's the bit I cut off it's no big deal.

I reckon jibjob has got it.

If you want something else to insulate your humidor, you can get polystyrene boxes from eBay in loads of different sizes. Just make sure you get the new ones rather than the second-hand fish boxes...
