unless i've missed something, i don't think the embargo will be lifted any time soon, so i wouldn't worry too much about it!!! from what i know through news reports etc, barrak obama has fell in line with past US presidents, you know the old tale, when they (cuba, castros) cast off communism and embrace US style democracy then the embargo will be lifted!!!

I suspect that Cuba will be able to up it's production for the US market, but only to a point until cigar quality starts to fall.
I see prices escalating wildly too.

Probably consumes more CC them the rest of the world as it stands now. So any lifting isn't really going to hurt production. The difference between the U S and the rest of the world is They don give two hoots what their Gov. says, they do what they want and want what they do.

What is going to happen to the cigar market in Europe when the USA lifts the embargo against Cuba?
Sadly, no signs the embargo is going to be lifted any time soon.
That being said, initially (for a year or 2 i would guess), you'll see prices rise, and quality probably drop.
Most cigar smokers in the US, even if they don't prefer cubans, would, in the initial months after the lifting of the embargo, probably purchase cubans as they'd be new to the market (legally anyway). You'd have huge demand and limited supply. Prices would surely rise, and depending on Cuba's response, if they tried to meet all the demand, quality would probably drop as Cuban cigar makers scrambled to make enough quantity. I would guess it would be a year or 2 until smokers in the US normalize their purchases.

Correct on the stock build-up, that has been confirmed and in effect for some years now, no worries there.
Not sure about shortage and/or price increase though. Would depend on quality as well, not just on quantity
I doubt very much that the loosening of the Cuban embargo is very high on Obama's agenda at present. I imagine he will be rather busy with other things at present and he will not be feeling able to push through things that his opponents will object to. Like this.
Does this mean there is some nice Cuban stock with a couple of years ageing on it?

I'm still surprised at how I always stumble on some decently aged cigars hiding away in the Havana shops.
Lately I've been doing most of my shopping at one particular store but even then... for example a cab of Boli Belicosos from 2003 or Grandes de Espana from 2002. About a year and a half ago I found a lonesome box of long discontinued and nearly unobtainable Partagas Churchills Deluxe from July 2001 sitting in a display humidor @ Melia Habana.
But having said all that, it's normally the case these days that most of the current stock will be from 2009/2010.
Nothing wrong with that from my experience so far.
There are a lot of factors that have also not been considered. There are trademark issues with general that need to be worked out. There is also the issue of the American palate, which is not whetted to the Cuban taste.
It will be interesting, but if it is going to happen in the near future, Obama will have to get reelected.
Echoing what a few others have said, lifting the embargo is not something that is likely to happen anytime soon. The possibility of thawed relations between the US and Cuba seemed like a likelier possibility in the earliest days of the Obama administration, but then many things looked rosier then!
When it does lift, we'll almost certainly be super hungry (initially) for Cuban cigars here. All of the branding issues have to be worked out, though, along with distribution and franchising . . . miles of red tape before we smoke!
Personally, I think it's useful to think of this issue in stages. I doubt there will be a wholesale change overnight. Look for a gradual loosening: the first big development will be for the US to lift the ban on travel to Cuba. Family members can travel to the island now, but for those of us here without family in Cuba, it's off limits.
There's also a political pissing contest between whoever is in the Oval Office and the Castro brothers. Their hold on Cuban politics is in such a late stage that it's not unrealistic for the US to just wait until they're history, and make sweeping changes then. Republican and Democratic administrations alike have exhibited amazing patience with regard to maintaining an ineffective policy (it's failed to deliver a fatal blow to the Castro regime, and it has arguably negatively impacted human rights), so continued patience may hold the day.
You guys will have plenty of warning, no doubt. This is one American who is going to be sure to indulge when I am in the UK, because I am not counting on another chance anytime soon.
