Whilst perusing my collection for something to enjoy today I picked up a 2008 Cohiba Maduro 5. I sniffed it and thought yeah, why not.

Curiosity got the better of me and I had a quick Google where I found a single 2007 stick going for £385.

    I gently placed it back.

Why you think you can sell it for 385? Or that you would replace it? Fire away young man. Fire away

Yeah, I've thought about this a bit since I placed it back.

I'm not going to be selling it, so that's not the reason.

Nor would I be inclined to replace it.

I think it's to do with how much I'd actually enjoy it now. See if I had just gone for it, I imagine it would have been a very nice smoke. Now that I know its outrageous valuation, I don't know that it would be that nice...

It's all relative and I'm now on the wrong side.

If I could sell it, I would and buy a box of other cigars. It won't taste 10 times better than a 30 quid cigar.

Keep it for a special occasion and enjoy it then.

Trouble is I've got loads of 'special occasion' ones and I know I'll never have enough special occasions in 3 lifetimes!

I'll save it for good company.

I suppose the cigar itself can become the special occasion when you light it up.

The irony is that it wasn't a particularly good cigar in the first place as maduros go

The case for so many cigars if you bought them 4+ years ago..... prices now are so crazy

I always say with special wines and cigars that saving them for a special occasion is usually a waste.
If it's a typical afternoon and you open a special or expensive bottle or light a rare cigar then that becomes the occasion in itself, it can lift a dull or boring day and make it a special occasion.
If there's another reason you are having a good time often the special cigar/wine/whiskey is not needed.
Of course this is all within reason but you could be waiting for a day that never comes.

10000% agree. Very good perspective. I had this discussion with a friend this weekend. My view was what if it's your last ever random Tuesday on earth and you didn't celebrate it with your best cigar?!

Smoke em while you can and enjoy it to the fullest. No prize for being the richest man in the graveyard.
