  • Smell vs Taste

    Hi,

    Been a while....

Haven't left the scene, just not been round these parts for a while!

Had a very enjoyable herf in Geneva a week or two ago with a few forum regulars, thought I'd stop in and say hello again.

I've noticed something recently that I though quite interesting...

If I leave my humi for a decent amout of time unattended and the rh drops slowly over time to low 60's. The smell upon opening is muted, which I've usually felt is a bad thing and a sign I need to to up humidification. So I usually do so at this point and some time later the lovely aroma on opening is back again and rh back up around ~68%.

Now what I have noticed, repeatably, is, the smokes I take out when the aroma is low are better in every way than the ones I take out when the cabinet smells at its best.

I do wonder if I may be inadvertently 'dry boxing' my entire stash before picking one to smoke then also wondering if there is actually a down side to long term 'drier' storage.

Essentially, what I've found through long term experience is, in my own opinion, a negative correlation between humidor smell and taste.

"Here, cigars are stored at 11 degrees centigrade and at a relative humidity of 68%, which remains unvaried throughout the year to ensure an even pace of maturation."

I have to apologize for the long waiting time which had some reasons. However, I am proud to publish the final Questions & Answers. Thank yo...

"And at 55 to 60% relative humidity. High humidity seems to be much more damaging to cigars versus high temperature. But again mind you: this is a one man’s opinion based on one man’s experience."

Dang, that part about oxygen ruining the ageing of cigars...

I'm often checking on the cigars I have put away for ageing - opening the box, checking that they're OK and giving them a whiff... :'(
