  • tax on tobacco up from 6pm today

    Screenshot from 2023-11-22 17-36-58.png

EDIT: There's an online calculator that works out the duties and tax provided by HMRC! https://trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/...00/import-date

    https://www.gov.uk/government/public...cco-duty-rates
Tobacco product Duty rate from 6pm 27 October 2021 Duty rate from 6pm 15 March 2023 Duty rate from 6pm 22 November 2023 Impact on customers
Cigars £327.92 per kg £367.61 per kg £395.03 per kg Additional 33 pence per 10g of cigars
11.6g is an averge robusto by weight.

So after this 6.65£ of your robusto is excise duty + customs duty + vat. So £1.34 is cigar!

So this is what the tax and net pricing looks like for a 13g £7.99 robusto. (I'll do a Cohiba later .. )

    Did i get it right?

Don't forget customs duty which now adds 25% onto the price (rather than 5% while we were in the EU)

oh thanks! I'll need to redo my diagrams too then.

      So
      1) Excise duty (£395.03 per kg)
      2) Customs duty (25%)
      3) VAT (20%)

I guess these accumulate in that order.

In fact I remembered Mike wrote this up https://www.boutiquesmokes.co.uk/blo...ready-to-wince

Customs duty separate on the box price (pre tax).
        E.g. £200 box of cigars (250g tobacco)
        Excise Duty = £99
        VAT = 20% of £299 = £59.8
        Customs Duty = £50
        Total Price= £408.80

Before you get to talking about taxes don’t forget this:
It’s customary for Habanos cigars that retail takes 40%.
I bet you H&F takes an exorbitant piece of the cake too.

So let’s do an example here of 1 CoRo WITHOUT any taxes/vat added:

Prod. price (estimated way too high) 1£
Habanos wholesale price to H&F: 10£
              H&F wholesale price to B&M: 20£
              Shop price: 36£

Those of you who are good at math can add taxes and VAT at the appropriate step.

Point is: the CoRo will end around 40-50£ where the production price is less than 1£, of which a worker at Laguito probably gets less than 10p a stick - LESS than!

Conclusion: if you absolutely DETEST participation in child labour, over exploitation of human resources in under developed third world countries, you should STOP SMOKING CUBAN CIGARS NOW!😎

I agree with the principle but are things much better for the growers and rollers in Nicaragua/Honduras/etc?

One can only assume that they must be, given the amount of Cuban rollers jumping ship and moving to such places.

why summer is better than winter opportunities for outdoor activities like swimming or hiking, and the vibrant atmosphere with blooming flowers and greenery. Summer often brings a sense of energy and freedom that many find invigorating compared to the cold and often restrictive nature of winter.

And deprive them of any income at all?!
