Will my cigars be fine until I go home?…

Hello all!

I recently purchased some lovely Cuban cigars in Verona, Italy. I bought a box of 25 Le Hoyo de Rio Seco Cigars and a box of 25 Partagas short cigars. Both boxes were already opened but had been kept in a humidor in the store. They were the last boxes left.

I purchased these boxes on the day I arrived and by the time I get them home and into my humidor they will have been without a humidor for four days. I am in Verona where the current average humidity is 69% and the temperature 68 Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius).

Will my cigars hold up for the four days out of a humidor but in their opened boxes?

Any opinions and advice will be appreciated.

I thought as much.

They will be stored in the bathroom where humidity is on the more favourable side. I’ll try my best to monitor it. They’ll be going into the humidors as soon as I’m home anyway.

Thank you. Unbelievably cheap here! Spain even more so, but delighted with the prices. The Hoyo box alone in the UK is around £1,100 I believe. I paid something between £550 and £600.

Very good advice. Will likely take Boveda bags.

Do you also reckon they’ll be fine for the four days in their boxes in the bathroom? I think after some time in the humidor they’ll be up to scratch, but I certainly won’t be smoking them right away without them resting a while.

As long as you don't have loads of steam in the bathroom!

Go and buy some cling film and wrap them up if you're worried. Usually available everywhere in a mini market or somewhere. This is what I usually do.

But out of direct sunlight, obviously. Not somewhere where they'll get hot. They'll be fine for four days. Especially if the ambient humidity reaches the 60s.

While we are on it, in fact, what is your opinion on freezing cigars after a trip? I only read about this today while I was doing some research and it seems a very peculiar thing to do. Not sure I’d be happy freezing 50 fresh Cubans in all honesty!

All Cubans are frozen before export by Habanos! Given the power shortages in Cuba there are some who take further precautions and freeze them before they go into long term storage. I freeze custom cigars for 3 days.

Look it up. It's done to kill off any tobacco Beatle risk.

Sorry to worry you further, but if the cigars are now very humid from the bathroom and you wrap them in cling film in warm environment there will be risk of mould. Boveda would help regulate. Without knowing the humidity, difficult to know...

Sounds like they'd be better off unwrapped for now.... but it's only a few days so don't stress.

And yes, I had thought about this. They’ve only been in the bathroom for about six hours and while there was steam it wasn’t at all excessive. Smoking a Por Larrañaga by Lake Garda as we speak and this was also in the bathroom during my morning shower. It’s smoking like a dream. Lovely even burn, smooth and simply delicious.

I depart early on Tuesday morning and will be back home in sunny Scotland the same day.

Would your advice be to simply but the boxes in my room out of sunlight rather than keep them in there for a second shower? I reckon that few hours in the bathroom will keep them ticking over long enough. I certainly won’t be wrapping them in anything. I can tell that they’re not over exposed. I’m still learning in many respects but I’ve been smoking cigars for three years and they are all fine to me.

Let me know but not long to go now and they’ll be in a humidor as soon as I’m through the door.

I’ll be looking into the freezing method to inform myself regardless. Bought these from a reputable dealer in Verona and they are all in shipshape.

Cigars are more robust than you think.. however Sudden changes in temp and humidity can cause problems. Keeping them in the bathroom is a very risky move imho, I’d be more comfortable with them out of sunlight (in your suitcase maybe?) for a couple days, and they can comfortably and slowly re-acclimate when back home with boveda or your preferred humi situation.

I’ve had cigars swell and split because of shower tactics.

This is what I have been led to believe online also. Sure, it’s pertinent to take best care of your cigars, but I think the whole ‘drying out in two days’ concept is overboard.

With regard to my bathroom strategy, they were only placed in there this morning while the shower was on for 15 minutes. There was steam, but nothing which in my opinion has overexposed the cigars to high, rapid humidity. They’re all still near in their boxes and I’ll keep them in my room in the shade now. Not sure if their short few hours in the bathroom will have done them any good, but they’re not swollen or otherwise impaired.

I’ll just keep them in my room until I depart and get them straight into the humidor when home.

A rather lovely looking bunch if I do say so myself. They’ve spent less than eight hours in the bathroom and it was by no means choked with steam. Doubt it’ll harm them much, but we shall see after leaving them in the humidor back home for a while…

I meant to ask also, but how long do you reckon you left cigars in a high humidity bathroom/shower environment before observing cracking?

I’ve pooped this lot in my room in the shade after a few hours in the bathroom today. Will stick with this until home.
