  • Any advice on how best to rescue these?

Or if they’ll even need rescuing!

I’ve been gifted these by a friend’s father. They came out of a humidor at an unknown RH, but that was within limits on the humidor’s gauge. The friend’s father was a serious cigar smoker and very fastidious so we assume they were in excellent condition when they were sealed into the polythene bag as you see them now, this was two years ago, since when they’ve been sitting in the dark in a Big Yellow storage unit.

The polythene is, I assume, slightly permeable as it’s not a Boveda-type bag.

So I have had a similar situation recently - and congratulations - there looks like some lovely stuff in there! I love this sort of find!

I did a load of online research and the best advice I found was to try re-humidify them very slowly! So use a Tupperware container/humidor separate from any other stash and use low humidity Boveda packs first to slowing try and bring them back up to a good level whilst trying not to split/break the wrappers. And then after a number weeks you can put in a higher set of Boveda packs to bring them up to a normal humidity level gently.

You will need to check for mould too - just in case - but from the photo I can’t see anything obvious.

Hope this helps - and I am still definitely learning - so there may well be some better advice from the masters on here!

Yes, agree with Bullittboy, put in tupperware box & bring up slowly. Can be done with a couple of dampened cotton buds if you don't have low Boveda. Aim to take a few month to bring them up to 65%. They look good so hopefully they'll still have a decent flav.

You could shove a hygro in there to start with to see where they are at. Will take a number of hours if not overnight to get a reading. You might not have to do anything!

Likely they will be absolutely fine, humidity is often quite high in the UK most of the year anyway. They look fine from here. Having said that all solid advice above, maybe stick a hygrometer in or go by feel, you can usually tell when a cigar is too dry/wet in the hand.

Roll one gently between your thumb and forefinger next to your ear. You should hear if it’s too dry

Thank you all for your valuable advice. I will get these this evening, so will pop a hygrometer in the bag overnight, that should give me an idea where they’re at. I will report back!

I was given some unknowns similar situation. I put them in a lock'n'lock with a hygromter and just left them for a month or so (I don't remember the RH but it was a bit low) I then added boveda pouches (again I don't remember which I used and for exactly how long) to bring the RH up slowly. They seemed to smoke ok with no unpleasant flavours.
