Welcome to the world of Puro, and the financial ruin that goes with it.

For a minute reading the thread title, I'd presumed Monica Lewinsky had joined our hallowed ranks.

Apologies for the question, I'm just checking you see, you didn't inhale it did you?

As for how much - well, as much as you're enjoying. I've smoked cigars until I've burned my fingers, and tossed some into the river before I've even reached half way (Monte Open Regata, for reference). Then there's the debate around 'splitting' a cigar - smoking it across two sessions. It's been covered a few times before, I personally dislike the practice, but it's very much an each to his own thing.

And when... Well, it all depends on the cigar. But ultimately, as Bwgan says, when you have enough time (and when you want to). I generally go for afternoons/evenings (I'm not really a morning 'gar person).

It sounds like the RyJ No.2 was a little too strong for you. Since you're new to cigars, smoke after lunch or after dinner. Never smoke on an empty stomach(I smoke on empty stomach all the time ), smoke it slow and smoke it all the way to the nub.

            Enjoy!

              +1 for this advice.

When just starting, out make sure you don't have an empty stomach or it can be the shakes and nausea for a while afterwards. MAke sure you fill up first and it is a lovely enjoyable feeling you have, don't eat anything to spicy though or it can dramtically change the flavour for the stick.

My first proper cigar was an RJ tubo too - I think a No3, rather than 2. I got from a corporate event a couple of years previously & it had customised printing on the tube so I don't know the size for certain.

I still love RJ 3 tubos, not that I smoke them very often, a great introduction to the world of puros.

I hope the sore throat doesn't mean you gave the tube the "Linda Lovelace" treatment. The best avoidance measure is to step down in size, eg to an RJ 3 and/or choose a milder brand such as El Rey Del Mundo, Fonseca, Flor De Cano, or a lighter non-Cubans eg as rolled in the Dominican Republic.

Whatever - Welcome in & I hope you soon find a few cigars that suit you - which you should be aware will change over time & is a part of what makes this "hobby" so interesting.

BTW I generally much prefer to smoke in the afternoon than late at night, but like most, have to take the opportunities as & when they occur. A full-ish stomach is definitely a goods idea, whenever you smoke.

Thanks so much for all of the great advice.

I accidentally inhaled a few times (which was not a nice experience).

What cigars are a bit more mild and have a really obvious flavour? I found it nice and it tasted good, but I found I really had to focus to get the nice taste and it was only every few 'hits'.

Would appreciate your advice on that, thanks guys!

Probably best to pick by brand - Cohiba, Montecristo, H. Upmann and Hoyo de Monterrey are ones that spring to mind for mild-medium smokes, plus Romeo y Julieta, which you've tried. Might I suggest you pick a small one of those (mareva or corona size)?

Here's a handy website for you (although bear in mind it's not been updated in a while):

cigars, cuban cigars, cigar reviews, cigar ratings, habanos, cubans, top cigars

I often check in there to see what the recommended smokes are for a particular brand (word of caution, the ones with dates afterwards tend to be Limted editions and so are rarer/more expensive)

Oh, and if you're going for a Monte, avoid the No 2 for the time being. That one takes a little practise
I'm still waiting for the whiskey to whisk me away
And I'm still waiting for the ashtray to lead me astray

                        Thanks for the link man!

I was looking at buying a sampler pack on Cgars. What do you think of these two?:

I'd go with the petit corona sampler. You really should try a monte 4. Also, although it's personal preference, I'm not really a fan of the very thin cigars. If you ask Mitch nicely he might also throw in the matches and cutter on the petit corona sampler too

Either are good, really depends on the size of cigars you like although the question should be which should you buy first

As I said earlier, and others too, I'd definitely concentrate on petit coronas as the size to get into smoking and to try a few different brands.

For the best light strength cigar, with good flavours, go for the El Rey del Mundo Petit Corona.

Definately go for the PC selection. Lots of different flavours.
