  • Dominican Republic cigars similar to Montecristo in flavour

What cigars from Dom. Rep. are similar to Montecristo in flavour? Wondering if there's a cheaper Dom. Rep. version. Or even RyJ.

Errm I don't know how they would compare to a montecristo as I have never smoked a monty yet But AVO XO are a really nice Dominican stick nice and smooth and a little floral enjoyed every one I have smoked I believe they are made by Davidoff or in the same factory atleast I may be wrong there and feel free to correct that if it is

There are NC versions of both brands, not sure if they are Dominican or not. PeeJay would be your man to ask about that.

Both the NC versions of Montecristo and RyJ are good smokes but they have a lot of variations within the range so there is no profile as such. I like the RyJ 1875 range and have several vitolas.

Are Leon Jimenes good Dom. Rep. cigars? I'm becoming disillusioned with Cuban Cigars. Smoked on Monte. no 4 today. Quality was very poor!

All I'll say about buying cigars in the DR, is the variety is great but the prices are no better than in Belgium, i.e. only a little cheaper than the UK. I only bought one stix on our hols there & that's coz the wife insisted I should try one.

That's because most of the big production names are for export and are actually re-imported back to sell. Look out for local brands like Don Lucas and you can pick up some decent smokes.

Doms like Fuente, Davidoff, Avo have their own distinct character that is not very Cuban, I find a good Connecticut has those cedar, nutty, hay flavours of CCs, like the Undercrown, Camacho and Nub.

Definately worth trying some of the Don Diego lines. Very nice mild smokes. The perla is a great morning smoke with a coffee

You could see what flavors there are in the CAO range. I have had flavored cigars before but years ago. I remember them being poor quality and pretty naff. but the CAO are supposed to be decent and are classed as a premium cigar, but i haven't had one so can't comment.

If its something a little different your after every now and again have you considered a pipe? there are some fantastic tobaccos and some of the aromatics are brilliant. There's something for every mood and in reality for a quick puff or when you in the mood to try something different, the tobacco is relatively cheap.

                              worth a look!
