  • 2021 Cigar Round Up

Hi Folks, lets see your cigars of note from 2021. I have just written my diary up to date & as older members will know I like my stats so here they are: 127 smoked, half a dozen were NC's this was just to smoke them up before the move back to the UK as I didn't want to pay any duty on those! Avge age approx 15yrs. The number in the first column is the number of that vitola smoked. 87 Different vitolas. 4th column is RG, avge 42.5th the Year & 6th my score (which includes value for money under my marking scheme).

It's a German cigar made from German tobacco; a gift from a German friend. Appalling but a gift is a gift, at least I know not to buy a box of them if I should ever see them in a shop!

Simon, clearly a lover of Cubans, but what is it that encapsulates the main reason(s) for your preference over NC's?

Great list Simon - interesting to not see any current production 19/20/21 Cubans in there. (According to our friends down under there are some stellar smokes coming out from Cuba at the moment) - Or is it simply the case you are on a self imposed buying ban and already have more than enough stock?

Good question Al, I haven't bought any new boxes for a while. I knew I was moving for over a year & it would have just added to those I had to bring over. Secondly, we have just bought a house 40%+ more we raised from the sale of our Belgian home so no spare cash for cigars for a while.

If I removed the 50's-70's stix I think the avge age would be 10yrs. I prefer at least 5yrs on most stix so happy enough. Once we are in our new home (hopefully in March), I'll get to sort out my collection & concentrate on smoking the older standard stock so they don't get too mellow. I might need a hand though....

Cheers Rich, I find it interesting to see the spread of smokes over the year, it's often difficult to appreciate it as you go through the year itself. I was limited by time quite a lot preparing for the month for months before we left & the family commitments kept arising afterwards.

Us kiddos keep a photo diary on the instagramophone thingy. Of course much easier to browse a list. And I know you keep more detailed notes.

Nice to see a KSA in the list!

Cheers Banos, I have a photo library but too old fashioned for Instagram, have a few thousand photos on an external hard drive. Labelled with marca/vitola/date so I can retirve a pic of any cigar I wish. Have to admit I am behind on the labelling but now working 3 week trips, hope to get up to date soon.

KSA, I bought a couple from McDee & they would be the first NC's I have bought for myself since I started smoking Havana's. I have to admit they not bad & as a slim long vitola, I would certainly smoke again & I can't say that about any other NC I have tried so far!

Comparing with prev yrs, I didn't have so many amazing cigars but the '70s Boli CX (Coronas Extra) was the last pair from a 50 cab, that I won in 2013 from Mitch's auction. They were amazingly strong & the 'fullest' flav cigar I have smoked. So much so I wasn't so keen on them to start with & sold a few but tastes change & I grew to appreciate them far more. They cost £25 a stick & x50 is a fair financial layout, 70% of the total I spent on cigars that year & a risk for a cab I hadn't been able to personally view.

Just checked my diary & found something I had completely forgotten. I sold most of the CX's in 2016 to buy my Cohiba Seleccion box Dec 2002, so no regrets there then as that is the best box I ever bought & at £1k a bargain compared with current prices. That's because I bought one of the last 3 that Joann of Gesto's had in stock. Recently saw a box go for £3k!

It turned out to be one of my best buys at auction, others included ERDM Panatela Largo 70's, in wooden slide lid box, RG Slenderella's 2001 & Party SD No1's. Auctions were much more fun & practical when you could attend them, you could see who you were bidding against (mostly) & if you didn't get the first item you wanted you could go a little more on the next; the online version favours the auction house IMHO.

Interesting I keep seeing references that KSA are rolled in Cuba... no?

Also where did mcdee get royal connections!?!
