I got one on the back of Peejay's recommendation, good little unit, use it in the shed and keeps the air smoke free. Doesn't stop you stinking of cigars but definitely works better than the old extractor fan I used to use. It doesn't suck out the warmth either.

From a scientific perspective, if the room is directly connected to the rest of the house you need to create a negative pressure in the room to stop smells leaking out the room.
Simplistically this would be an extract from the room with a gap under the door to allow air to flow into the room. This would mean air from the house is being “sucked” into the room and expelled which in a highly efficient, well sealed (new build) home could be problematic (much like having a crap draw on your fire because it can’t draw air into the fire before expelling up through the chimney). That’s why leaky pubs have amazing raging fires!
More technically (and ideally, and costly, and arse ache!!) you want 10 air changes of the rooms volume per hour (or more) which would require supply air and extract, supply with tempered air so it’s not cold and at low level with a large diffuser and extract car high level. That’s how PeeJay experienced what he did in NYC. Some sort of HRU would achieve this but as I said, it’s ideal, more money and arse ache! This is my life goal…
I may have experience in AC systems….
Fires are also great natural “extracts” if you have a “leaky” house…
If you get somewhere in between, it will be better than nothing!
