When you say might get you in trouble, how’s their sense of smell?!

Different people have different tolerances but smoke smell is far from easy to avoid. A decent air purifier can be effective at removing the smoke but the smell tends to stay only thing I’ve found that seems to actually work for the smell is an ozone generator but then I’m definitely fussy when it comes to smoking indoors and the smell!

Other than that design build etc is pretty much down to what you want it to be like. Doesn’t need anything particularly special other than as you say avoiding soft furnishings is a good idea and decent ventilation to the outside.

Following this thread with great interest.... I have a man cave with a large green table in it... I want to install some sort of half decent extraction so when I have a weather affected cigar I can flick the extractor on and suck the worst of the smoke and smell out..

Good luck with the much grander sounding study / smoking room....

To add to my previous comment for air purifiers look at their CADR rating (and get one that has been independently tested for this). If you’re smoking in the room you’ll want it to be able to purify the full room at least 5 times an hour. So do the maths from the size of room for power you’ll need. The blueair smoke stop filters are better than most too for absorbing the smoke smell.

Thanks for the insight. Definitely want to make sure there’s over-provision from an extraction point of view. Funny enough I’m the sensitive one when it comes to smells, and I don’t particularly like the stale smoke scent so it needs to be pretty clean.

I’ll check out the ozone generator as well. I remember using something similar for my aquarium at home a long while back.

The study will have doors/windows that open to a patio which will also help with ventilation too.

We use a couple of things in the cigar room at home, which whilst separated from the lounge by a patio door is usually open most of the time.

This runs all the time and auto senses when the air is smoky, working harder then to clear the smoke.

This was recommended by someone on here, might have been Peejay, and clears the lingering smell. After a heavy herf, I can close the room off, but it on max and there is no smell the next day.

Fan noises drive me nuts. I remember a conversation here talking about having an additional fan to create flow of air toward the extractor.

I think if I was having an indoor smoking lounge I'd want two doors between it and the rest of the house and maybe a ceiling mounted extractor in the space between them.

You want to extract the smoke before it has a chance to linger, fan noise is horrible so externally mounted extractors would be a good choice, keeping all the noise outside. Extracting the smoke first means the air purifiers will work a lot better.

Good subject & interesting tips, can be used in an outside Summer House/Office as well & then no risk of smells or smoke in the house so that's what I am hoping to have in our new house but if we have a Conservatory, I'll use that in the meantime.

I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to try smoking indoors, the internal garage is bad enough for smell finding it’s way in to the house through anyway possible.

Always interested to see how these turn out though. One day I’ll hopefully have a nice summer house like a few of the members here

Really good points on the way smoke tends to sneak it’s way out and linger where it shouldn’t. I like the idea of “airgapping” with two doors - not sure how the aesthetics will pan out but it’s probably one of the more technically sound solutions.

Still working on floor plans, so depending on what else is on that level it might not be too bad even if some scent leeches out. Will be redoing the HVAC in the entire house so it’s a good opportunity it’s to over engineer some dedicated strong and silent extraction for that room in particular and ensure no stale air mixing into the rest of the system or that’ll totally do me in.

Hopefully it all ends up working out and I can post some construction updates here for everyone.

Thats what I'm thinking. An inline fan outside of the room in an adjacent void. Fairly high flow fan. Extract point close ish to where smokers will be sitting. Have it running to pull as much of the smoke out pronto. Not really wanting anything expensive (would rather spend the money on cigars!) I've been thinking about just a surface vent, ducted to a large inline fan, ducted to outdoors.

The Macanudo Lounge in NYC has a system that blows air up from the floor and sucks across the ceiling. You can't smell the person next to you's cigar.
