  • Budget 2021 and Tobacco taxes

I don't understand this wording. But basically getting caught out short without your own cigars when you are out and about will likely end in tears:

"the duty rate on all tobacco products will increase by the tobacco duty escalator of 2% above RPI inflation. It was also announced that the duty rate for HRT will rise by an additional 4%, to 6% above RPI inflation and the MET by an additional 1%, to 3% above RPI inflation this year."

Most of us on here aren't rich - because of our cigar buying habit! It'll certainly curb inclination to buy the odd stick in the UK.

Looks like in real terms it should add about 35-50p onto the price of a cigar?

It’s an increase on the duty rate so it’s gone from £305.32/kg to £327.92/kg. Roughly 22p per 10g or 25.5p increase on a Robusto in tax. There’s often shop margins on that too.

Plus Cigar costs going up, it’s not a massive amount but the continual increases haven’t half added up

And monte 2 are £746 from cgars, they are rip off merchants tbh.

                Cohiba robusto £781 from casc.

Said it before but cigars in the UK are seen as millionaires fodder and priced accordingly.

I don’t think I could afford to smoke regularly without people bringing cigars back from overseas. A box of ryj no2 is around €126 in Schipol airport right now. The same stick is 3 times more expensive here ffs.

The tragic thing is, that retailers will put duty up on stock they haven't had to pay the new rates on...

I'm all for supporting your local shops but they need to start supporting the smokers.

I think Cgars, esp lately, have their prices very high, but I'm going to import some cigars from USA that you can't find in Europe and altho the price is around a third of the UK prices in general, I figure with tax and all it will probably come out around the same. I was hoping for a double the price mark up, but triple is more likely from what I gathered online.

Anyone ordered from US and know how much extra % is added in tax to your original bill?

Since 2018 the duty on a box of CoRo has gone up £17.25 in total… there are other minor tax increases in that time. But most of this is driven by Habanos and the shops themselves

Chatting to Mike Choi on Thursday, he said that Boutique Smokes aren't going to hike their prices until they have to restock, and that might not be until after Christmas

It’s certainly become very expensive to obtain cigars in the UK. So wish I’d started to stock up decades ago.
