Central Heating and Humidity

Hey everyone, looking for a bit of advise if anyone has had a similar issue.

When the central heating comes on the houses RH is reading around 70%, I noticed this morning that the top shelf of the cabinet is reading 68%, the bottom 64%.

Not really an issue atm, slightly higher than what I’d like but I’m more concerned about if the RH in the room becomes higher how can I control the RH in the cabinet? My heating is set to a thermostatic timer, 18c in the morning 15c throughout the day, 18c in the evening so there will also be quite a fluctuation in the rooms RH throughout the day. Is there a risk of wrappers splitting with the constant changing?

The cabinet has holes along the back around the bottom of the top shelf, all are covered with tape other than 1, I may try covering this as well and see if that makes a difference.

Any thoughts or if you have something similar with your set up please let me know.

So this has come up as a couple of people have these type of cabinets, I know Martyn and I have left the holes in the back open. I know Henrik had them covered up. Not sure about the others.

As the average temp drops the RH rises, but I've never seen an issue from this. Whether its a desktop humidor or cabinet. I've never used active humidity control nor controlled the temp in the humidor. During the cold weather the RH does go up towards 70%.

I've not got a problem with wrappers cracking/splitting. Other than the very occasional one, but seems too sparse to be down to the environment.

I’ve got 65% Boveda throughout the shelves, more than enough for the amount of cigars. I am planning on getting a cigar oasis to run alongside the Boveda eventually.

I think the ambient humidity from the room is penetrating the cabinet through any opens and gaps. It only seemed to be the top shelf so I would guess it’s mainly from the holes in the back of the cabinet. I’ll re seal those when I get a chance and see if it makes a difference.

If you are really worried you could just pack them in plastic bags with the Boveda and keep those in the cabinet, I do that in a couple of small cabinets I have so I know they are sealed in at a constant RH without any worry.

Higher humidity higher up is common and normal unless you have a perfectly sealed system it tends to happen. So I’d expect a couple percent difference in a full height cabinet anyway.

Personally I wouldn’t worry but I probably would plug the holes, keep an eye and look at the swings, up and down over 5% regularly definitely isn’t ideal but still unlikely to be enough to cause splits. If it’s properly seasoned the humidor will dampen any swing heavily anyway.
