Smoke vs don’t smoke the last third

Hi guys

I’ve read in many places that you’re not “supposed” to smoke the last third of a cigar, but I almost always do and find it a pleasurable part of the stick with a very different flavour to the rest. I don’t take it all the way to the end, but a couple of cm away from the band then I discard.

Any thoughts on why this is a common opinion on leaving valuable tobacco for the bin?

If it's a good cigar. I'll burn my lips on it. I don't think it's a common opinion on here at all! If in enjoying the cigar or even if it's just not bad I'll usually smoke it down beyond the band.

Of course a not good cigar will get tossed earlier. Depending on my mood and of I have another to hand!

When I started smoking cigars; like many I guess, I Googled how to do it and one of the questions raised was when to stop smoking a cigar. The answer was when the flavour changes to one that you don't like, hence some have been binned after a couple of draws. There's your answer.

Cheap doesn't always mean bad, don't fall for that idea, but you'll smoke a few duff ones before you uncover the gems.

This is exactly my principle. Had some sticks taste really crap which went in the bin quickly, but others I really smoke till I feel the taste is starting to compromise then I stop.

Great to hear all your opinions on this so it’s not just me being a savage and breaking some fictitious etiquette manual 🤣

Final third is often the best bit if it's a good cigar and I'll usually keep smoking to the last inch if it is.

Churchill supposedly, only smoked half of a cigar, quoted saying, the second half of a a Cuban, is as bad a s a non Cuban cigar! His garden used to break up his long buts & put them on the garden as mulch.

Personally, I usually smoke to the band but if it's well aged, I'll smoke a little more. 30-50yo cigars can be smoked until you can't hold them anymore & use a pin to enjoy the last few puffs. The only 'mistake' IMHO is to continue smoking if it turns bitter, in my experience it never gets better after that & leaves you with a nasty bitter after taste.

Smoke your cigar until you’ve had enough of it, is the simple rule I follow. I always remove the band about halfway through it and carry on puffing until i either get board or have no choice but to put it down as I’ll burn my lips if I don’t.

I smoke a cigar until I've had enough of it. This tends to be to the last few mm with a dagger. If it starts to get bitter or muddy, I tend to roll off any ash and give it a blow through and purge. This usually cleans up the flavour so I carry on. If it doesn't I let the soldier die. Case in point the Caldwell Lost and Found One Night Stand I had Monday. I left the last 1.5" because I didn't like the flavour. Olivia Serie V Melanio - burnt my lips 😎💨

Can't argue with that Pandora, if you're not enjoying it any longer, why bother? The other issue is tar. Sometimes (more often of greener cigars, although I have had it a couple of times on aged cigars) you get this bitter taste & can see black tarry spots at the head, answer cut another 1/4" - 1/2" off & carry on. Usually solves it, although in bad examples it can build again.

Has anyone noted this on NC's? Haven't noted it myself, in my rather limited experience.

It often can be, and it is often the strongest part too so a bit of a balancing act if you have stuff to do afterwards.
