  • Wrapper shades

Do you prefer or seek out certain wrapper shades for particular marcas, or do you not find much difference between the shades?

I don’t have too much experience with this but one I’m certain about is party shorts, the light wrappers are nowhere near as good as the dark.

I'd go for wrapper types rather than colours, I'm quite partial to a Connecticut.

Generally I will always pick darker, within NCs as John said it’s more about type but I love a San Andreas wrapper and other darker shades generally

I’m not so much about shades but how it feels, if it’s silky or not if that makes sense?

Depends on the stick. I enjoy light sandy wrappers as well as deep dark rich oily wrappers as well as a midtone wrapper too.

I generally enjoy deeper oily wrappers on bigger sticks. But have a box of Choix Supreme on near claro wrappers which have been divine!

              Claro wrappers for me.

I don't tend to discriminate when it comes to wrappers. I'll give most things a go once. My preference does seem to be more towards the darker side, Colorado Maduro and darker, but that's not to say that I won't smoke claro and the lighter wrappers. There are too many choices out there and life's too short to say no to something new.

I’m quite flexible when it comes to wrapper shades - although I do tend towards the mid/darker variances and do like Sumatra. What I do look for when I have that rare opportunity to inspect in person is look for the toothiness or grain along the wrapper surface. I’ve consistently found the more toothy a wrapper the more I enjoy the flavours involved.

I always like a mottled wrapper where there are some darker patches, usually never go wrong with them. I'm not fussy on shade to be honest, I'll usually look for a oily wrapper with a nice sheen rather than a dark one. Although those wrappers do tend to be darker by default.

I tend to enjoy the more fuller flavoured Cuban brands mostly - Bolivar, Ramon Allones, etc and I feel the colorado claro/colorado wrappers suit them well. For something like a Hoyo Epicure or a Davidoff, I think they suit a lighter, claro wrapper.

Interesting reading all of your thoughts. I've come across people online who swear by certain shades for specific cigars.

I wonder what contribution a wrapper makes to a cigar in terms of flavour as its just the wrapper and the majority of the cigar is filler...

In my experience the contribution is huge, more than I can logically explain.

Ever tried the same blend in two wrappers or smoked a cigar where the wrappers come off?
